DIY I Dig You Valentine Bucket

If you’re looking for an easy Valentine that’s tasty and functional, this DIY I Dig You Valentine Bucket is perfect. The free printable for the tag is in the post too.

Make this the best holiday with help from the rest of our Valentine’s Day posts.

If you’re looking for a really cute homemade Valentine’s Day treat to give out for Valentine’s Day, this DIY I Dig You Valentine Bucket is perfect.

It’s a DIY because you’re assembling it, but you’re not really making anything. It’s more assembling, especially if you use our free printable for this. If you make your own cards to stick into the basket, you’re doing a little more DIY-ing.

And, we’re posting these as a Valentine’s Day treat, but they would work for something like party favors for an end of the school year party, a Tiki party, a summer birthday party, and more.

What’s really good about them is the bucket and accessories are reusable. So, you’re not just giving out something that will get thrown in the trash immediately. The buckets will get used all summer long.

Supplies to make a Valentine's Day treat bucket.

DIY I Dig You Valentine Bucket Supplies:

How To Make A I Dig You Valentine Bucket:

A plastic bucket filled with Hershey's Kisses.

Put the shovel or scoop in the bucket and fill with Hershey’s Kisses.

If you’re making a lot of these, like for classroom gifts, you’ll need a lot of Hershey’s Kisses. It’ll take about 40 to fill the bucket. So, that can get expensive. So, what you can do instead is fill the bottom with balled up bubble wrap or packing paper. That’ll take up some room and you won’t have to completely fill the bucket with Kisses.

A tag that says "I Dig You" with two hearts in a tag-shaped paper punch.

Print out the free “I Dig You” printable below.

Use the tag punch to punch out the printable.

Side note: If you don’t have the tag punch, you can use scissors. That’ll just take longer. I bought my tag punch when we were getting married and have used it for so many things since, everything from wedding crafts to homemade gift tags for Christmas. So, it’s definitely worth the investment.

Tape a toothpick to the back of the tag.

Stick the toothpick in the treat bucket.

If, for whatever reason, you don’t want to use toothpicks, you can use a single hole punch to punch a hole in the upper right of the tag (where there’s a blank space and not a heart), loop a piece of ribbon or baker’s twine through, and tie it to either the handle of the bucket, the top of the sand shovel, or around the bucket.

I Dig You Free Printable

To make this craft really easy on you, I designed the I Dig You Free printable. All you have to do is print it out. As with all of our free printables, it’s designed to fit an 8.5- x 11-inch piece of paper, so you can print it out at home.

Download the PDF file above and save it on your computer. Then, print it when you’re ready to use it. For best results, print it in landscape mode, in full color, and on “high” quality.

This should go without saying, but the printable is for your personal use only and permission for reprinting for commercial purposes is not authorized.

Variations:

Skip the bucket:

If you’re making these for your kids and neighbors, they probably fit in your budget. But, if you’re making these for a class, they can get a little expensive.

So, rather than following this post as is, pick up a package of plastic shovels. Wrap a treat bag around the bottom of the plastic shovel, fill the bag with candy, then tape the I Dig You printable to the outside of the treat bag.

That way, you’ll use less candy and won’t pay as much because you’re not buying buckets.

Use homemade candy:

Schools often want wrapped candy when you’re giving out Valentine’s Day cards or treats, in this case. But, if your class doesn’t have that rule, or if you’re making these for your friends, you can use your own homemade sweet treat to fill them instead.

Go with our Valentine’s Day Graham Cracker Chocolate Bark, Valentine’s Day Chocolate Popcorn, or Valentine’s Day Chocolate Covered Pretzels. Making something at home might be cheaper than purchasing packaged chocolate.

Skip the candy:

Not a fan of giving out candy. No problem. Pick up small packages of kinetic sand and put those in the buckets instead.

DIY I Dig You Valentine Bucket: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to use Hershey’s Kisses?

You can use any candy of your choice to make these. I just use Kisses because they’re the perfect Valentine candy — because they’re kisses. But, you can really fill these with whatever you like.

Do you have to use the printable?

You don’t have to use the printable, of course. I just made it to make it easier. Instead, you can just make your own tags. They don’t even have to be the same shape as mine. You can use a circle paper punch, if you have that instead. Be creative.

And, they don’t have to say the same thing either. If you have another cute saying in mind, write that on your tag. These are your own DIY Valentines so get creative.
