Bank Of America’s Free Museums On Us Program: Frequently Asked Questions

When is Museums On Us weekend?

Museums On Us occurs the first full weekend of every month.

If a month starts on a Sunday, the Museums On Us weekend will be the second weekend of the month. In all other instances, Museums On Us weekend is the first weekend of the month.

What museums participate?

You can find a list of Museums on Us participants here. Search by city or zip code, whichever is easier. On that list, you’ll also see a designation of “Saturdays only” or “Sundays only”. Some museums will only participate one of the two days of the weekend, and that will be noted. If there’s no notation, it means the museum participates on both days.

If you’re in Wilmington, NC like I am, you can go to the Cameron Arts Museum for free.

Of course, with the way things are right now, be sure to call your local museum or attraction beforehand, just to make sure that it is definitely participating.

Do you need to pre-register for the museums?

The Smithsonian hosts Museum Day, which is a nationwide program that grants free admission to anyone at participating museums for one day annually. For Museum Day, you have to pre-register since participating museums only have a limited number of free tickets to give out for Museum Day.
But, for Bank of America’s Museums On Us program, you don’t need to pre-register (presumably since there are far less Bank Of America cardholders who participate than people who participate in Museum Day).

You just need to bring your photo ID and valid Bank of America, Merrill or Bank of America Private Bank (US Trust) credit or debit card.

Card holders can get one free general admission ticket. And, you will actually be given a physical ticket, just like any paying visitor. So you will be restricted to whatever that general admission ticket allows.

So, be sure to keep that in mind if you’re heading to the museum with a child who doesn’t have a credit or debit card. Your admission will be free, but you’ll have to pay for your child to enter. (Side note: I’ve heard that museums have been lenient with children’s admissions, so don’t let that deter you from checking out a museum. You may be surprised at the ticket counter.)

A slight workaround is that cardholders and authorized users are able to participate in the Museums On Us program. So if your child (or partner) is an authorized user of your Bank Of America account, you can get him or her a card. Then, that card can be used during Museums On Us days.

Is anything excluded?

Ticketed, special exhibitions, and fundraising events are excluded from this offer. Of course, be sure to check with your local museum to see if anything else is excluded (or if these exhibits are included, since museums are allowed to make their own rules for this program).

Also, be sure to ask about any restrictions or rules that need to be followed right now. You don’t want to be surprised about something (like needing a mask) after you’ve already driven to the museum.

Can you only go to your local museums?

So, this is cool.

Bank of America card holders can receive free admission at any participating Museums On Us museum (zoo, botanical garden, etc.).

So, let’s say you’re planning a trip to San Antonio, Texas. There are five museums in San Antonio that participate in the Museums On Us program: Briscoe Western Art Museum, The DoSeum: San Antonio’s Museum For Kids, Witte Museum, McNay Art Museum, and the San Antonio Museum of Art. You can actually go to all of those in one weekend, if you wanted, completely for free.

I’m not saying you should plan your vacation around a Museums On Us weekend. But, if you happen to be planning a vacation during the first weekend of a month, check to see if there are any participating museums in the area.

Are you limited to one museum per weekend?

So, we basically answered this question in the question above. But for all of you who are jumping around this post and not reading it straight through, we will answer this.

You are not limited to one museum per Museums On Us weekend. You can go to as many as you have time for.

To expand on this, you can go to a museum on Saturday, and, if you loved it or you’re just bored and looking for something to do, you can go back again on Sunday. There’s no one who is going to stop you.
