If I have the chance, I will make the cutest treat for a party or potluck. Give me any excuse and I’m in.

So of course, with Valentine’s Day on the horizon, I made super cute Love Bug OREO Cookies. If you’re making this sweet treat when it’s not Valentine’s Day, you can just call them Ladybug OREO Cookies.

Whatever you call them, these cookies are a really fun treat that are so much fun to make. They don’t take all that long to put together, since you’re just decorating store-bought cookies. But they’re so worth the effort.

These cute little ladybugs aren’t the only OREO cookie recipe we have on Drugstore Divas. For more ideas, check out our list of The Best Oreo Dessert Recipes. These are recipes for fudge, dipped cookies, and more.

How To Make Ladybug OREO Cookies:

Red candy melts in a bowl.

Melt the red candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl according to the package.

The easiest way to do this is to melt them for one minute, then stir. Then, microwave and stir at 30 second intervals until the candy melts are completely melted.

If you’ve never used candy melts before, I recommend reading our Tips For Candy Melts post to get familiar with them before you start making these.

An OREO cookie being dipped into red candy melts.

Dip an OREO cookie into the red candy melts, leaving a very small half oval section blank. That’s where the head of the ladybug will be.

When you’re dipping, don’t worry about what the back of the cookie looks like. No one will see that. It’s the top of the cookie that you want to pay attention to.

Place the dipped cookie on a silicone baking mat-lined cookie sheet.

Quick note: If you don’t have a silicone baking mat, you can use a piece of parchment paper or wax paper instead. Any of those options will prevent the dipped cookies from sticking to the baking sheet. I personally prefer silicone mats because they’re reusable, so they’re more eco- and budget-friendly.

Sprinkle some of the Valentine’s sprinkles over the melted candy.

Continue until you’ve dipped all of the cookies.

If your red candy melts harden while you’re doing this, you can just reheat it in the microwave. That’s a big perk of using candy melts to dip cookies because you can just reheat them to remelt them. You can’t do that with chocolate chips.

A piping bag with black candy melts in it over a tray of ladybug cookies.

Melt the black candy melts according to the package.

Place a No. 4 piping tip into a piping bag. Fill the piping bag with the melted candy melts.

Pipe an oval shape over the OREO cookie part that’s not covered by the red candy melts. Cover that space completely with the black candy melts.

Pipe a thin black line from the center of the black space all the way to the back of the cookie, over the top of the red candy melts, to turn the red section into two equal wings.

Ladybug OREO Cookies: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use a mold?

You actually can just purchase a Ladybug Sandwich Cookies Mold, which does a lot of the work for you. But, I think it’s actually quicker to hand dip them than to try and get the melted chocolate into the mold cavities. But, I wanted to mention the mold in case you found that to be easier.

Can you use other cookies?

We use OREO cookies in this recipe because they’re round, making them the perfect shape for these cute ladybug cookies. But, any round cookie would work. Nutter Butter makes a round cookie, so you could use that if you wanted a chocolate-free cookie.

What if you don’t have a piping bag?

If you don’t have a piping bag, you can cut the corner off a ziptop plastic bag and use that instead. A freezer bag is a little more sturdy, if you have one of those, but I’ve used sandwich bags in the past and been fine. You just have to pipe slowly and keep your hand steady.

Can you use chocolate chips in this recipe?

We don’t suggest using chocolate chips for this recipe because the coloring will be off. Chocolate chips will cool to be a brown color and you really want the bold black for these ladybugs.

What if you can’t find red candy melts?

If you’re having trouble finding the red candy melts in your store, you can melt vanilla almond bark and mix in some red gel food coloring to turn it red. You don’t want to use water-based food coloring because that will cause the almond bark to cease and you won’t be able to dip the cookies into it.

We don’t recommend using white chocolate chips instead of vanilla almond bark.

How can you store the cookies?

Wait until the melted candy melts have cooled to room temperature. Then, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They’ll last a couple weeks that way.

How would you pack these cookies as a Valentine’s Day gift?

These cookies would be a cute party dessert for a class party. If you wanted to gift them, add green paper shred into the bottom of a plastic treat bag. Add one or two of the love bug cookies into the bag. Then, tie the top with a piece of Valentine’s Day ribbon.
