If you know me, you know I’m always making some sort of themed crafts when holidays roll around. I like upcycle crafts the best. They’re a really inexpensive way to get your home looking festive. And, if you end up tossing them after the holiday, that’s fine. They were headed that way anyway.

So, with July 4th around the corner, it’s a nice time to make some red, white, and blue decorations.

If you want to make some that your kids can help with, this DIY Patriotic Toilet Paper Rolls Craft is perfect. You can make this easy craft really quickly, which means there’s a very good chance that you won’t lose your kids’ attention while you’re making it. It’ll work on their fine motor skills, which is nice.

Even nicer, there’s a very good chance you have everything that you need for this fun craft at home, so you can make it on the fly.

You can toss this after the holiday, if you want, or you could store it away and pull it out on the other patriotic holidays (Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day) so you can feel a little festive on those days too.

How To Make Patriotic Toilet Paper Rolls:

A paint brush with white paint painting a toilet paper roll white.

Paint one of the tubes with the red paint. Paint a second with the white paint. And finally, paint the last with the blue paint.

Let the base coats dry completely. Then, paint a second layer of paint.

I usually paint the first layer up and down and the second layer side to side. That reduces the chance that you’ll visibly see brush strokes.

Let them dry overnight.

Patriotic Toilet Paper Rolls: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to paint the toilet paper rolls?

If you’re making these with younger children and you want to make this a more simple craft for them, there are a few different ways you can make this without paint.

Construction paper:
Cut red, white, and blue construction paper to be the size of each tube. Have your kids use glue sticks on one side of the construction paper, then stick the piece of paper to the toilet paper roll. That’s a lot easier for their little hands to handle.

Washi tape:
Cut pieces of red, white, and blue Washi tape and have your kids stick them onto the toilet paper rolls.

Ribbon:
Cut a bunch of red, white, and blue ribbon (make sure you cut a long piece of ribbon that can fit around the tube). Tie those around the toilet paper rolls.

They might slide, so this craft would be a little more stable with hot glue, but I would be worried about young kids around a hot glue gun.

Do you have to use toilet paper rolls?

If you want to make these, but you don’t have any empty toilet paper rolls, you can actually purchase cardboard tubes online or at your local craft store.

You could also use empty paper towel rolls and just cut those into three equally-sized pieces.

Can I use different colors of paint?

If you found this craft and it’s not around July 4th, you can absolutely use whatever color of paint you want. It just, you know, wouldn’t be considered a patriotic craft.

But, these types of crafts are really just a great way for the whole family to spend time together. They’re not crafts you’re selling at a craft fair. So do you. Make these however you (or your kids) want. As long as you’re having fun together, that makes this a great craft.
