Save your toilet paper rolls and transform them into this Toilet Paper Roll Frankenstein to cheaply decorate for Halloween.
Make this the best holiday yet with help from our other Halloween posts.
I save all of our empty toilet paper rolls so that I can craft with them in the future. They’re great to have when little kids come over because we can frugally craft with them. They’re great to have when inspiration strikes and I want to make something cute, like this Toilet Paper Roll Frankenstein.
It’s not our first toilet paper roll craft on Drugstore Divas and it definitely won’t be our last. Frankenstein joins our bat, mummy, ghost, and pumpkin toilet paper roll crafts.
Paint a thin layer of light green paint onto your toilet paper or craft rolls. Let the paint dry.
If you need to, paint a second thin layer of paint.
Since toilet paper and craft rolls are thin and absorb a lot of paint, they can warp if you paint a very thick layer of paint. So it’s better to paint multiple thin layers of paint instead of a single thick layer.
While the paint is drying, cut a strip of black construction paper. From it, cut small triangles to make Frankenstein’s hair.
Since it’s hair, and Frankenstein’s hair is pretty wild, your triangles don’t have to be even, so have fun with it. And, honestly, this was the longest part of the craft. Like longer than waiting for paint to dry. Don’t get frustrated. Just keep cutting triangles. It’s worth it.
Glue the hair onto the top of the toilet paper roll.
Personally, I just put a tiny line of glue near the top and stick the hair on. Leaving the triangle bangs to have a little movement adds to the craft.
Also, if you put the glue line a little lower than the top, then that extra bit up top can go above the top of the toilet paper roll. That way, you can cover the top of the toilet paper roll, which makes Frankenstein look a little neater.
Cut Frankenstein’s face (eyes, unibrow, nose, and mouth) from the white and black construction paper. Don’t forget to cut Frankenstein’s famous scar.
Glue the face on.
To make it easier, I actually ended up using a toothpick to apply the glue to the pieces of the face. It was easier for me because the pieces were so small. So you can use that tip. Or don’t. Whatever works for you.
Use a marker to make the pupils. It’s a lot easier to do that than cut out a tiny black dot from construction paper.
Display your Frankenstein wherever you want.
Toilet Paper Roll Frankenstein: Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have to use toilet paper rolls to make this?
Nope! Toilet paper rolls are the frugal way to make this Frankenstein craft. But, if you don’t want to use toilet paper rolls (or you don’t save them on a regular basis like we do), you can purchase cardboard tubes for crafts online.
Those cardboard tubes are the same size as toilet paper rolls, they just haven’t spent any time in your bathroom.
Can you use cardstock instead of construction paper?
In most of our crafts, we use cardstock instead of construction paper because it’s thicker and holds up better than construction paper.
But, in this craft, you want the flexibility of the construction paper to wrap around as the hair. Cardstock won’t wrap around the tube as well and the craft won’t look as nice.
Is there a paint-free version of this craft?
If you don’t want to use paint to make this Frankenstein, you can make the entire craft using construction paper.
Measure a piece of light green construction paper around the craft roll. Cut the hair and face, just like this craft. Instead of gluing those onto the toilet paper roll, glue them onto the construction paper. When everything is dry, glue the construction paper around the toilet paper roll.
Can you make this craft with kids?
You absolutely can make this craft with kids. You just need a few adjustments.
Let your kids paint the toilet paper roll themselves. Be sure to tell them to paint thin layers (even though, when I tried that when I made our Toilet Paper Roll Ghosts with some kids, they didn’t really listen to my suggestion. That meant we had to wait a while for the paint to dry and I started losing their attention).
If your kids are little, you’ll want to cut the face out for them but they can glue it on themselves. And if your kids are really little, you can skip gluing the face all together (mostly). Instead, just hand your child a marker and have them draw Frankenstein’s face.
You’ll probably want to cut the eyes out of white paper though because that would be hard to draw (unless you used something like White Out to “paint” the whites of the eyes).
