I had an urge for shish kabobs and by coincidence we had just gotten a stainless steel kabob set from Cave Tools. It has so many great features, so I was really excited to try it.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a BBQ grill at the moment as I just moved to North Carolina from New York and left the old grill behind. I thought to myself, “I can wait until I get a new grill or I can make some shish kabobs in the oven.” I decided I couldn’t wait for the grill.
To the oven we go.
First, I need a good recipe. Oh, great. The skewer set comes with a free recipe book to download. There were so many delicious sounding recipes to choose from, but the one that caught my eye was the Carolina BBQ Rub. (“Since I’m now living in North Carolina, let me try this one,” I thought).
Next, I thought, “How could I use my oven more like a grill?”
“Oh,” I thought, “I can broil the shish kabobs instead of baking.”
Now to start cooking.
I rubbed my chicken pieces with the Carolina BBQ rub and skewered the chicken along with red, green, orange, and yellow peppers. The set comes with five skewers, so perfect for myself, my husband, my mom, Lisa, and Pete.
I then placed the skewers on the rack. The rack is really what made me excited about trying this product. It raises the skewers about two inches above your grill. This means you will never have to worry about your kabobs sticking to your grill or cookie sheet, if you are using your oven like I am.
The rack also lets you rotate your kabobs very easily and, in fact, allows you a full 360-degree rotation so you can have an evenly cooked kabob. I usually end up burning at least one side of my kabobs so I was very happy with this feature.
The design of the skewers makes so much sense. I am surprised I’ve never seen anything like them before. They are actually flat and not round like other skewers. So the chicken and veggies stayed where I put them and didn’t spin around the skewer.
The kabobs cooked perfectly in my oven. The special features of this set made cooking the kabobs so easy. My family had fun using the built in food slider to push the chicken off their skewers and they loved the Carolina BBQ rub although it was a little spicy!
The shish kabob dinner was a huge success thanks to Cave Tools. I can’t wait to try it on my grill this summer.
If you want to try these, purchase the stainless steel kabob set online.

Shisk Kabobs Made In The Oven: Frequently Asked Questions
If you’re making a rub, like this Carolina BBQ rub, for your chicken, you want to cook the chicken as soon as possible after applying the rub.
If you let the rub sit on the chicken too long, you run the risk of it falling off and not seasoning the chicken.
Rubs that have a lot of salt, and are left on for too long, can also dry out the chicken.
If you are trying to prep this Shish Kabobs made in the oven recipe ahead of time, you can cut the chicken and bell peppers ahead of time. Then, when you’re ready to cook, cover the chicken in the Carolina BBQ rub, skewer the chicken, and cook the kabobs in the oven.
We love using chicken in shish kabobs because chicken really absorbs the flavor of the rub. If you prefer, though, you can use sirloin steak, lamb, or even shrimp to make kabobs in the oven.
Keep in mind that cooking times will vary if you choose a different protein for your oven-cooked shish kabobs.
Almost any vegetables that you have on hand work well on shish kabobs.
We used bell peppers in this recipe, but you could use onions, cherry tomatoes, button mushrooms, zucchini, squash, or honestly, any vegetable that you can slice and stick on a skewer.
We like making these in the oven on nights when it’s too chilly to grill outside, but you can definitely make these on a charcoal or propane grill too.
The cooking time may vary, though. But the ingredients and process of the recipe are the same if you make them in the oven or on the grill.
And, since the stainless steel kabob set works in the oven or grill, you can still use it if you decide to make these shish kabobs on the grill instead.
This Shish Kabobs made in the oven recipe is the perfect Weight Watchers recipe.
On the Freestyle Plan, chicken, bell peppers, and seasoning are all ZeroPoint Foods. You aren’t using any oil to grill these, so you don’t have points from that. And since you’re using a rub, not a marinade, you don’t have any points from that either.
So these shish kabobs made in the oven are 0 WW Freestyle Points.
If you’re on the myWW Blue, Purple, or Green plans, be sure to check your WW app or calculator before adding this recipe to your day. Your points may vary on those programs.
Yes. These Shish Kabobs made in the oven are a gluten free recipe.
I wouldn’t necessarily call these keto-friendly as written, but they’re not terrible. Chicken is keto-friendly, although chicken breast is not as great on keto as a chicken thigh. And bell peppers are low carb, but the green peppers have less carbs than these colorful ones.
So, as we have this recipe written, these aren’t keto-friendly shish kabobs. They’re not terrible, but they’re not fantastic. Using chicken thighs and only green bell peppers would make this more keto-friendly, but not as delicious.
What goes well with shish kabobs?
Shish kabobs can be the main part of a meal, but it can’t be the only part of a meal. We suggest a side salad, then any of the following:
