If you know me, you know I love making themed treats for holidays. There’s just something so fun about being festive.

If you’re the same way, you’ll love these Red, White And Blue Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods. They’re the perfect sweet treat for your fourth of July party (or any other patriotic party).

The best part about these tasty treats is that they only take a handful of minutes to make. I say 15 minutes, but it really depends on how many you’re making. You can make two dozen or so in that time. Of course, if you’re making more, they’re gonna take you a little longer.

These are red, white, and blue patriotic pretzel rods to look like the American flag. If you wanted to make these for another holiday, you could change the candy melts to match other color themes. Just follow the same process as these.

How To Make Red, White And Blue Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods:

Vanilla almond bark in a glass in the microwave.

Melt the vanilla almond bark, according to the package, in a tall glass.

If you’ve never worked with almond bark, the easiest way to do this is to put the pieces in a glass and microwave for 30 seconds. Give them a gentle stir. Then, microwave again at 30 second intervals until the almond bark is completely melted.

A pretzel and spoon in a glass that's filled with melted white chocolate.

Put one of the pretzel rods in the glass of melted vanilla almond bark.

Use a spoon to help cover the pretzel 2/3 of the way with the melted vanilla almond bark.

Shake the excess chocolate back into the glass.

Lay the pretzel on a silicone baking mat-lined cookie sheet.

Continue until you’ve finished all of the pretzels. By the time you get done with the last pretzel, the white candy melts will have cooled enough to pipe colored chocolate on top.

Red candy melts in a bowl.

Melt the red candy melts according to the package.

If you haven’t used candy melts before, we have a great post with Tips For Using Candy Melts that can help. But, quick rundown: Put them in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for one minute, then give the candy melts a stir. If you need, microwave them for an additional 30 seconds until the candy melts are melted through.

Red candy melts drizzled on the top half of pretzel rods dipped in white chocolate.

Spoon the candy melts into a piping bag.

If you don’t have a piping bag, a ziptop plastic bag will work. Cut off a small piece from one of the corners and fill the bag with the melted candy melts.

Quickly, but carefully, pipe red stripes across the top third of the white chocolate.

Melted blue chocolate and a spoon in a bowl.

Melt the blue candy melts according to the package.

Just like with the red candy melts, put the melted blue candy melts in a piping bag (or a ziptop plastic bag, if that’s all you have).

Pipe blue stripes across the bottom third of the white chocolate, leaving the middle section alone.

Let the melted chocolate cool completely before eating.

Red, White And Blue Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use white candy melts instead of vanilla almond bark?

Instead of vanilla almond bark, you can use white candy melts. But, vanilla almond bark tastes better than candy melts. Since the majority of this pretzel is white, you should use the vanilla almond bark because the pretzels will taste better.

But, as far as aesthetics go, if you only have white candy melts, it’ll look just as pretty.

I don’t suggest using white chocolate chips in this. They don’t melt as easily as vanilla almond bark. And, if you over melt chocolate chips and they burn, there’s no saving them. And if they cool while you’re still working with them, that’s it. They’re hardened. With vanilla almond bark, if it hardens while you’re still using it, you can remelt it in the microwave and it’ll be as smooth as when you melted it the first time.

What can you use instead of a silicone baking mat?

If you don’t have a silicone baking mat, you should definitely buy one. I use mine all the time. Cookies, or, in this case, melted chocolate, will pop right off. It makes for such an easy cleanup because nothing gets stuck to it.

If you don’t have one, you can line a baking sheet with either parchment paper or wax paper instead. Those will work, but they’re disposable. So that makes a lot of garbage. A silicone baking mat is reusable, so it’s more eco-friendly and ends up saving you money in the long run.

How can you store chocolate-covered pretzels?

Store chocolate covered pretzel rods in an airtight container at room temperature. You don’t want to store them in the fridge because that could cause the candy coating to discolor. If you don’t have any containers that are large enough for pretzel rods, you can store them in a ziptop plastic bag.

How can you package these?

If you’re making these for a patriotic event and need to package them, you can purchase pretzel-sized cellophane bags online. What’s nice is there are some with a sticky adhesive on one side so you can close them without needing ribbon or any sort of ties.

When the pretzels are completely cooled, put each one in its own cellophane bag and close the top. I would suggest putting the top of the pretzels in first so that the uncoated portion of the pretzel is at the end with the adhesive. That way, when people open it, they’ll be able to grab the uncoated portion rather than the chocolate side.
