I love dessert. If I’m invited to your house for dinner, I will definitely be bringing a dessert because I love something sweet after a meal.

In the summer, though, I don’t want a heavy dessert. I want something that will satisfy that sweet craving, but I also want something that is light and fresh. That’s why fruit is the perfect summer dessert. But let’s be honest. Bringing a fruit tray somewhere looks a little boring.

So, when you’re making a dessert to bring to one of the many patriotic parties this summer, bring Patriotic Fruit Flag Kabobs.

These fresh fruit skewers are a really cute and festive way to have fruit at a party. Plus, arguably the best part: The skewers come together in under 10 minutes. So, if you’re looking for a last minute idea, this is it.

Patriotic Fruit Flag Kabobs Ingredients:

How To Make Patriotic Fruit Flag Kabobs:

A strawberry cut in half.

Wash the strawberries. Pat them dry with a paper towel. Cut the tops off the strawberries and discard them. Cut the rest of the strawberry in half lengthwise.

Banana slices on an orange cutting board.

Cut the bananas into 1/2 inch slices.

A blueberry on a skewer above a white bowl filled with blueberries.

Add seven blueberries to a skewer, gently pushing them all the way to the top.

A strawberry on a skewer.

Add a strawberry slice, then banana slice, continuing until you filled the skewer two-thirds of the way. This should take three strawberry slices and two banana slices.

Repeat this pattern until you’ve made four skewers.

A banana slice on a skewer above sliced bananas.

On four other skewers, alternate between strawberry slices and banana slices. You’ll need five strawberry slices and four banana slices.

Make four skewers this way.

Arrange the skewers on a wooden board with the skewers with the blueberries on the left, followed by the blueberry-free skewers. Make sure the strawberries and bananas line up to create the flag shape.

If you have any fruit left over, you can make a few more blueberry skewers. Make skewers with just seven blueberries on them, then stick them between the four skewers with all three fruits on it. That will fill in the gaps in the spacing, making your fruit flag look fuller.

Patriotic Fruit Flag Kabobs: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make fruit skewers the day before?

You can definitely make these ahead of time. Just lay them out on a parchment paper-lined serving tray, then wrap the tray in plastic wrap. Keep the fruit skewers in the fridge until you’re ready to serve them.

How long will fruit kabobs stay fresh?

Fruit kabobs are best eaten within a day of slicing the fruit.

You can sprinkle a little diluted lemon juice over them to keep them fresh all day (I do that a lot with apple slices).

Can you leave these fruit skewers out?

The fruit will be fine at room temperature. I wouldn’t keep them outside uncovered during your party because of flying insects around, but inside they’re fine.

How do you store leftovers?

If your patriotic fruit kabobs don’t get finished, just take the fruit off the skewers and store them in an airtight container in the fridge.

Can you use different types of fruit?

You can definitely get creative and use any other types of fruit. Substitute raspberries for the strawberries or add blackberries in with the blueberries.

Can you use different types of food?

If you want to add something else to the pieces of fruit, you can use marshmallows or mozzarella pearls instead of bananas to make the white portion of your flag. You could also cut angel food cake into squares and use that as well.

Do you need to soak bamboo skewers for fruit kabobs?

You don’t need to soak the skewers. People will soak skewers before adding meat to grill so that the wooden skewers don’t burn. Since these aren’t going near any flames, you won’t have to worry about that.

More Dessert Kabob Ideas:

If you have leftover skewers and strawberries after making these patriotic kabobs and you’re looking for a great way to use them up, make our Chocolate Strawberry Dessert Kabobs. It’s such an easy recipe because you’re using store-bought doughnut holes to make them. The hardest part is melting the almond bark for the chocolate drizzle on top.
