I say this a lot, so if you’ve been following Drugstore Divas for a while, you’ve heard it. But, I love making cute treats for holidays. I love having an excuse to create an adorable and delicious treat that fits a theme. Any chance, I’m in.
So of course, when St. Patrick’s Day is on the horizon, I spend my time making shamrock treats, like these Nutella Puff Pastry Shamrocks.
Is this a traditional Irish dessert? No. But it is a cute recipe that your family will love.
And it’s such an easy recipe, too. You spread Nutella between store bought puff pastry, cut it, shape it into shamrocks (no special shamrock cookie cutter needed), sprinkle it with green sprinkles, and bake. That’s it.
This is just one of our fun recipes we have for the holiday. For more ideas, check out our list of Fun St. Patrick’s Day Desserts. Any of them would be perfect for your St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

How To Make Nutella Puff Pastry Shamrocks:
Before you can use it, you need to thaw puff pastry. Double check the back of the package for instructions, but I just leave it out on the counter for 40 minutes.
Pre-heat the oven to 400 F.
Gently roll out one of the sheets of puff pastry until it’s about 11- x 9-inches.
Quick note: I actually use my silicone baking mat on the countertop as my work surface when I roll out the dough. When the puff pastry is the size I want, I transfer it to a large cutting board.
Spread the Nutella across the puff pastry, leaving about a half inch around the outside.
Roll out the second sheet of puff pastry.
Set it on top of the Nutella-spread sheet.
Gently push down around the edges to create a bond. Also, squish in the sides so that the two pieces of puff pastry are the same size and shape.
Use a fork to crimp all four edges.
Use a ruler to measure 0.5-inch sections. Mark them with a knife.
Lay a ruler down at each mark, then use a pizza cutter to cut strips. You should have 22 equally sized strips of dough.
Discard the first strip.
Shape the next strip into a shamrock.
The way to do this is easier than you’d think. Make a loop from the dough by putting the ends together. Pinch the loop in four places (two on each side) to make the leaves of the clover. You can pinch them tightly, but the puff pastry will puff and push them out to give space between, so don’t worry too much about making these very tight.
Put the dough shamrock on a silicone baking-mat lined cookie sheet. Continue until you’ve finished all of the dough.
Sprinkle green sugar sprinkles on top.
Bake for 17 minutes until the outer edge of the puff pastry turns golden brown.
Let them cool completely before eating.
Nutella Puff Pastry Shamrocks: Frequently Asked Questions
You’ll find puff pastry in the freezer section of your local grocery stores, near the frozen pie crust.
Store any leftover puff pastry shamrocks in an airtight container at room temperature. They’ll last about two to three weeks.
The Nutella spread really helps to define the shamrock after the cookies bake. So, if you skip it, you might have a hard time identifying the design.
With that being said, you don’t have to use the Nutella brand. Any brand of chocolate nut spread would work. I just say Nutella because it is the most common hazelnut spread.
You don’t. The puff pastry will turn golden brown on its own without an egg wash. And the sprinkles will stick directly to the dough, so you don’t need anything to act as a glue.
I highly suggest buying a silicone baking mat. I use it every time I bake, dip chocolate, and cook a variety of things rather than using foil (when I’m cooking) or parchment paper (when I’m baking). It’s sustainable and better for your budget since it’s reusable. Mine is huge and fits my largest baking sheets, but they do come in a variety of sizes.
If you don’t have one, you can use parchment paper. But I do suggest you buy one sooner rather than later. It’ll change your life.
