Stores have Christmas decorations out already and I’m not even decorated for Halloween yet. Of course that means I have to make some decorations. Because why would I run to the store to buy stuff when I have everything I need for this DIY Mason Jar Ghost right at home.

This project is super easy, but it takes a lot of patience. You will, literally, be sitting there watching paint dry. But the project comes out so much better that way.

What You’ll Need:

  • Mason jar
  • White acrylic pant
  • Black glass paint
  • Paint brush

What You’ll Do:

Wash and dry your mason jar. Make sure the inside is completely dry because you’re painting the inside, so any water can really mess it up.

Pour a little white paint into the jar.

Swirl it around, then add a little more, and continue until the inside of the jar is coated.

Trust me when I tell you: Don’t add too much paint at once. This is a slow process, but you conserve a lot of paint this way. If you dump a whole bunch in, you’ll waste paint and your craft will take days to dry. So do a little at a time.

And a little goes a long way. It will feel like you are hardly using any paint, then a ton accumulates as you’re drying. That happened to me the first time I used this technique.

I’m passing my learning on to you.

So drip, swirl, drip, swirl until the entire mason jar is covered. You can use a paint brush to help spread the paint if you’re really impatient, but it will result in brush marks that don’t look that great. The only place I would suggest you paint is around the inner rim and the bottom. Not the sides.

Turn the mason jar upside down and let the excess paint drip out overnight.

Use the black paint to paint a ghost face on the front of the mason jar. Using glass paint will make this a lot easier. If you don’t have any, you can use acrylic paint, but you’ll want to layer it on very thick.

Let it dry and display it.

If you have a bunch of mason jars in various heights and sizes (used spaghetti sauce jars or pickle jars would work), you can make an entire family of mason jar ghosts. That would be really adorable.

An alternate way to make this DIY Mason Jar Ghost — which will save you time if you are making multiple mason jar ghosts at once — is to spray paint the outside of the jar instead of using acrylic paint on the inside. I have a few thoughts about that.

First, by spray painting, you’re going to lose the shine of the mason jar. The craft itself will look fine a little matte, but it will be more eye-catching when it shines. That’s why I prefer to paint the inside.

Second, spray painting glass takes a lot more patience than people think. You can’t spray a thick coat because it will drip and ruin the whole project. Instead, you have to spray a very thin layer, let it dry completely, spray another thin later, let that one dry, and continue on until your jar is covered.

But, if you do spray paint the outside instead, you can use a normal layer (not an extra thick one) of black acrylic paint for the face. Just keep in mind you get one shot at it. If you mess up the face when you make it my way, you can just wipe it off and try again. If you mess up the face when you’ve spray painted the outside, you’re stuck.
