We host our friends and neighbors at our house all football season long. It’s really fun to be the house where everyone gets together.

Of course, that means I’m always looking for fun ways to decorate and serve snacks. If I have the chance to be creative and on theme, you know I’m gonna take it.

So, of course, I have a bunch of football-themed items to break out while we’re watching our favorite teams, like tablecloths and utensil holders. Last week, before the big game, I made these DIY Cork Football Coasters to go along with the rest of our football decor. They were a really big hit.

These coasters are really easy to make in just a few minutes and they hold up really well too. So you can make them now and reuse them every football season.

These aren’t the only homemade coasters we have on Drugstore Divas. For more, check out our list of Easy DIY Coasters.

They make really good coasters for home or great gifts (I’ve given so many sets of coasters away as holiday gifts).

How To Make DIY Cork Football Coasters:

A pair of scissors cutting a white paper.

Measure a 4-inch square onto a piece of printer paper. Cut it out.

Fold that square pattern in half, then half again. Cut a semicircle from it to form a football shape. You can trim it as needed to get the correct shape.

If it’s easier for you, you can draw the football onto the paper and cut it out, but it’s easier for me to freehand it and trim it. You could also print out a free free printable football template if you aren’t too keen on drawing your own footballs.

A white piece of paper being traced with a pencil onto cork paper.

Trace the football shape onto the cork sheet. Cut it out.

You want to trace the football shapes as close to each other as possible so that you can make the maximum number of coasters with the smallest amount of waste.

A white line being painted onto a football-shaped piece of cork.

Paint a white line on each side of the football, just like the stripes that are printed on actual footballs.

White laces being painted on a football-shaped coaster.

Paint a white line with three perpendicular lines for the football’s laces. You can paint them in the center of the football or at the top. You could vary the placement on every coaster or make one set with one design and a second set with the other design.

You can freehand all of those lines or you can draw them lightly with a pencil first, then paint over them. Do whatever you’re most comfortable with.

Let the white paint dry before using the coasters.

Now, quick note: If the cork paper you purchase has a peel off backing that reveals adhesive, just leave it affixed to the back of the coasters and use them that way. Don’t peel it off. If you do, you’ll have to cover it so the adhesive doesn’t stick to your furniture.

If it does pull off, or if you just wanted, you could trace the coaster onto a piece of felt, cut it out, and stick that to the back of the coasters using its adhesive.

Personally, I don’t think that’s necessary and I think it takes away from the coaster itself (because people will keep flipping it over to see the backside and will be a little confused to notice it’s not painted like the front side), but this is your project so you can do whatever you think is best.

DIY Cork Football Coasters: Frequently Asked Questions

What if you can’t find cork paper?

I found cork paper at our local Dollar Tree. If you can’t find any, you can order cork tiles online and use those instead.

Do you have to seal cork coasters?

I use triple clear glaze to seal most of my coasters, like our Homemade Photo Coasters. That’s so any condensation that gets on the coaster from cold beverages doesn’t leave water rings on the photo and ruins it.

But, since cork is porous, any condensation will just get absorbed into the cork. There won’t be any drink rings to ruin your coasters, so there’s no reason to need to seal these.

But, if you really wanted to, you could use cork sealer, which is usually used on cork sandals, to seal them. If you do seal them, just make sure to read the package and find out how long it takes for the coasters to cure and completely dry before using and stacking them.

Some sealers, like Mod Podge, require a full 30 days to seal. So, if you used that and stacked these coasters before the month was over, they’d potentially end up sticking together and ruining all your hard work.
