I love appetizers. Making them is part of the fun of hosting a party, which we do often. I try to change up my menu every time, and I always want to make something with a twist. That’s how these jalapeño poppers wonton cups were born.

I knew I wanted to make jalapeño poppers, but I don’t actually love them. The idea of stuffing a full pepper into my mouth just doesn’t suit me. And I think a lot of people feel the same way. These jalapeño poppers wonton cups have the same tasty jalapeño popper flavor, but they’re a lot cuter. Much better for a party.

Plus, I have a bunch of wonton appetizer ideas in my brain, so I might as well make them all. They’re super party-friendly because people can just pick them up and eat them.

Spoon the cream cheese mix into the wonton cups.

Bake about 15 minutes until the wonton cups have browned. Serve warm.

These were a huge hit at our last party. I’m glad I made two trays too because the first tray went so quickly. The mix would actually be a great jalapeño popper dip that you could just serve with tortilla chips.

Variations:

Use fewer wonton wrappers:

This recipe makes a pretty substantial Jalapeño Popper Wonton Cup. But, if you want something a little lighter, or if you need to make more of them, use a single wonton wrapper in each muffin tin cavity instead of two.

That will give you a smaller Jalapeño Popper Wonton Cup. It will still be just as delicious.

Add bacon:

These Jalapeño Popper Wonton Cups are vegetarian as is. But, if you wanted, you could add cooked bacon into the mixture if you want to recreate the flavors of bacon-wrapped jalapeño peppers. Be sure to add some crumbled bacon on top.

Add green onion:

After the wontons are done, chop up some green onion and sprinkle them on top. They’ll fall into the melted cheese and look really pretty.

Add red onion or celery:

If you use canned jalapeño, the filling will all be very soft. So if you want something with some more texture to make these a little more interesting, add chopped red onion to the mixture for a little crunch.

If you don’t like red onion, you could add celery instead.

Jalapeño Popper Wonton Cups: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use fresh jalapeño peppers in this recipe?

You can absolutely use fresh jalapeño peppers to make these jalapeño popper wonton cups. You’d just have to wash and dice the jalapeños yourself rather than just getting them from a can.

That would take a little longer, which is fine if you have time. But if you’re making these, along with a bunch of other appetizers, for a party, you might need to cut a little time off your prep. And canned jalapeño peppers are a good way to do that.

If you do use fresh jalapeño peppers, and you find you’ve bought too many, check out our list of budget-friendly jalapeño recipes.

Can you use a block of cheese in this recipe?

I usually say to use a block of cheese and shred it yourself rather than using bagged shredded cheese. The bagged cheese doesn’t melt well, so it’s not great for recipes where you want melted cheese, like pizza.

But, in this recipe, cheese is just part of the filling. You’re not really looking for it to melt, so it’s okay to use bagged cheese.

Plus, using bagged cheese saves you time, which you might need to do if you’re making a bunch of apps for a party.

Are wontons gluten free?

Wonton wrappers are not gluten free. They’re made with wheat flour, eggs and water, so they’re not gluten free and they’re also not vegan.

How can you store Jalapeño Popper Wonton Cups?

Store them in an airtight container in the fridge for about three days.

Can you make Jalapeño Popper Wonton Cups ahead of time?

You can absolutely make the filling for these ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

Don’t bake the wonton wrappers until you’re ready to serve them. They’ll get soggy in the fridge and won’t be as great as if you made them fresh.

How can you reheat Jalapeño Popper Wonton Cups?

Heat them on a cookie sheet at 350 F for about 15 minutes. This will crisp up the wonton wrapper.
