There’s more to pie than just serving it for dessert. You can make savory pies too. Check out this list of savory pie recipes for inspiration.

When you think of pies, most people think of sweet pies. Savory pies are always an afterthought. And then, when people try to think of a savory version, they think of a chicken pot pie and stop there. But there are so many delicious savory pies out there. So I put together this list.
I was inspired by the Fayetteville Pie Company, a restaurant we were hosted at on a trip to Fayetteville, NC. The restaurant serves sweet and savory pies. And savory just seemed so … baffling.
But, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I actually make a few savory pies. Not on a regular basis, but a few times a year.
And I figured you might be inclined to do so as well, if you had a few amazing savory pie recipes to inspire you.
(And, in case you’re looking for them, we didn’t put pizza pies on this list because they don’t really count. If you are looking for pizza, though, check out our list of The Ultimate List Of Homemade Pizza Recipes.)
Tasty Savory Pie Recipes
These are all of the best savory pies we’ve posted on Drugstore Divas. As we make more, we’ll be adding them to this list. So be sure to pin it, bookmark it, or save it however you do and come back every so often to see what we’ve added.
Shepherd’s Pie
Every St. Patrick’s Day, I make Shepherd’s Pie from scratch. It’s a great way to celebrate the holiday. Plus, Shepherds Pie is the ultimate comfort food. It’s warm ground beef and veggies mixed together then topped with homemade mashed potatoes.
Side note: Yes, using beef rather than lamb makes it technically a Cottage Pie rather than a Shepherd’s Pie. But, here in the United States, it’s considered Shepherd’s Pie even with beef.
The bottom of the pie is the beef mixture. It doesn’t actually have a flaky crust like you’d think of for a traditional pie. But, it’s called a pie, so it makes our list.
Serve it with Irish Soda Bread or just eat it by itself because it’s a full meal on its own.
Mini Tomato Pies
Savory pies don’t have to be meat pies. They can be vegetarian pies filled with cheese and tomatoes, like these Mini Tomato Pies. The best part about them is they’re individual pie bites, so you can just pick one up, pop it in your mouth, and continue mingling at a party.
Instead of using a traditional pie crust, these have cut puff pastry sheets as the base. The pieces are placed into a mini muffin pan and topped with the cheese and tomatoes before baking.
If you’re having company over, these are the perfect one-bite appetizer to serve them. We also eat these as a light dinner when we’re in the mood for something fresh and not heavy.
Taco Pie with Crescent Roll Crust
If you make just one pie off this list, let it be our Taco Pie with Crescent Roll Crust. It’s our second most popular recipe on Facebook. Of all time. Our first, if you’re curious, is our Carrot Cake Muffins. Which have nothing to do with pie.
Anyway, next time you’re deciding on dinner, go with this. It’s all the elements of tacos, but in a much easier to serve method.
Instead of a buttery pie crust as the base, this uses buttery crescent rolls. They add a buttery element to the tacos without taking away from the other flavors. You can top it with sour cream and green onions, just like a traditional taco.
Spinach Pie (Spanikopita)
We’ve already had an Irish Pie and a Mexican Pie on this list, so might as well add a Greek pie. Welcome Spanikopita to the chat.
Spanikopita, also known as Spinach Pie because it’s easier to pronounce, is layers of spinach and cheese stuffed between layers of fillo dough. Our version bakes in a skillet in the oven, not in a pie pan. Although, you could bake it in any sort of pie form that works for you (if you don’t have an oven-safe skillet). The result is a delicious, flaky, vegetarian pie that’s a crowd pleaser.
Don’t let the fillo dough scare you away from making this. The best way to learn something new is to just jump right into it. And that’s how I feel about fillo. It seems intimidating, but it’s really easy to use in this recipe because you’re just using it to top the savory ingredients that you’ve already cooked in the skillet. You’re not layering with fillo, so it’s a lot easier than a Spanikopita could be.
Garden Tomato Caprese Tart
It took until now, but we finally have a pie that uses a traditional, premade pie crust. This Garden Tomato Caprese Tart does just that.
The pie crust is spread across the bottom of the pie dish, then filled with cheese and fresh tomatoes. If you don’t have a garden, or if it’s just not tomato season, you can use store bought tomatoes for this.
This rustic pie is very similar to a caprese salad (which, we all know is one of the best combinations of flavors these is), but in a delicious pie form.
Air Fryer Breakfast Empanadas with bacon and eggs
When you’re thinking of pies, don’t sleep on savory hand pies. A hand pie, in case you don’t know, is basically a pastry with a sweet or savory filling that’s then folded and crimped, also known as pasties. Think an apple pie from McDonald’s. Or, in this case, an empanada.
These Air Fryer Breakfast Empanadas are, well, for breakfast. Because there’s no time of day where a pie doesn’t work.
What we actually do is use a homemade pie dough to make these (although you could make them using store-bought pie crust). Then, we fill them and freeze them. Yay meal prepping, right? When we need a breakfast, we just pop them in the air fryer until they’re golden brown and start our day. It’s one of our favorite grab and go breakfast ideas.

That's a lot of pies, but the tomato one looks the best to me. Not a fan of the English pies.
