Air Fryer Pizza Rolls Recipe

These are not to be confused with pepperoni rolls, which are so popular in the Midwest.

While we’re at it, I should mention that this recipe and Drugstore Divas have no association with Totino’s Pizza Rolls.

Start with one wonton wrapper.

Look at it like a 3×5 grid (3 rows high and five across).

Put two small scoops of filling, about 1/8 of a tablespoon each, in the second and fourth boxes in the middle row (across) of the grid.

Fill the air fryer basket with the pizza rolls. Make sure they’re not crowded and they’re only one layer high.

Air fry at 370 for two minutes, give the basket a gentle shake, and air fry for another two to three minutes until the wonton wrappers are golden brown.

Serve warm.

Tips For Making Homemade Pizza Rolls:

Shred the cheese. I know buying bagged shredded cheese is faster, but the cheese in those bags are packed with preservatives so that the cheese stays in individual pieces and doesn’t clump in the bag.

Those preservatives prevent the cheese from melting when you’re cooking it.

In most recipes when I want cheese to melt, like pizza, I always shred my own cheese. In this, it’s not too bad if you use bagged shredded cheese, but shredding your own is better.

For this recipe, I actually shredded half the cheese regular size and grated the other half using the garlic grater side of the cheese grater. I felt like it gave the pizza rolls a little more depth, but honestly, you can just do whatever’s easiest for you.

Don’t overfill the pizza rolls. Some of the pizza rolls are going to explode, no matter what you do. That happens with the store-bought ones too. I varied the cooking time and temperature, varied the amount and type of filling, flip flopped the way the pizza rolls were laying, and changed the way I folded the wonton wrappers.

It didn’t matter. There were always some that leaked, but this method worked best.

The best tip, though, is to not overfill the rolls. Don’t underfill them either. If you underfill them because you’re worried about them exploding, let me tell you: It won’t help. Some of them will explode anyway, and then you end up basically just wonton wrapper.

Spread the pizza rolls out in the air fryer basket. The air fryer works best when there’s air around the food. So, if you don’t have the patience to air fry multiple batches, just make a couple of these homemade pizza rolls.

We have this air fryer and can fit about a dozen pizza rolls per batch. So that means it would be about four separate batches for this entire air fryer pizza rolls recipe.

If you have an air fryer accessory set, you can put the rack in and air fry a second batch simultaneously on there.

Other filling options for Air Fryer Pizza Rolls:

Bell peppers and onions: If you wanted to make a vegetarian version, you could swap the pepperoni for bell peppers and onions. Cut the bell peppers and onions very fine, then sauté them on the stove until they soften. Add them to the marinara sauce.

Ground sausage: If you have sausage crumbles, cook those and then add them into the marinara mixture before filing the wonton wrappers.

Mushrooms: Finely chop the mushrooms, then cook them on the stove with a pinch of salt and garlic powder. Add them to the marinara sauce.

Spinach: If you have some leftover cooked spinach, finely chop it and add it to the marinara mixture with a pinch of salt and red pepper flakes.

Can you make Homemade Pizza Rolls in the oven?

I like making these Air Fryer Pizza Rolls in the air fryer because the clean up is basically non existent. But if you don’t have an air fryer and want to make this pizza rolls recipe in the oven, you can.

Put a silicone baking mat on a cookie sheet. Don’t skip the baking mat. You’ll end up with a big mess if you try to bake these directly on the cookie sheet.

Lay the pizza rolls in a single layer on the cookie sheet.

Bake at 350 for about 15 minutes, flipping halfway. Start checking them around the 10 minute mark because oven times can vary.

How can you store leftover pizza rolls?

If you have leftover pizza rolls that you already air fried, you can store them in an airtight container for about a week.

Can you freeze homemade pizza rolls?

I haven’t tried this, but if you do, let me know.

Can you make these Air Fryer Pizza Rolls ahead of time?

These are definitely great one-bite appetizer, so I could understand if you would want to make these ahead of time.

If you want, you can assemble these pizza rolls ahead of time and store them in an air tight container in the fridge until you’re ready to air fry them. Wonton wrappers can dry out quickly, so I wouldn’t assemble these more than 24 hours ahead of time.

You can’t air fry them ahead of time. They’ll get too cold by the time you want to serve them and won’t taste good.

How can you reheat these Air Fryer Pizza Rolls?

You can reheat these in the air fryer, oven, or microwave. They’ll taste better reheated in the air fryer or oven, though.

What else can you make with wonton wrappers?

This recipe uses half a pack of wonton wrappers because if you used the whole pack, you would end up with 96 pizza rolls, and that’s a lot.
