Oreo Witch Hat Cookies Ingredients:
You can get the full list of ingredients with measurements in the recipe card below.
- Oreo Thins cookies – You want to use the Oreo Thins. The regular stuffed cookies are too wide and throw off the proportions of the hat.
- Green candy melts – Since everyone is used to the Wicked Witch being green, we use green in this recipe. But any color candy melts would really work.
- Hershey’s Kisses – Any flavor of Hershey’s Kisses is fine, but you want a milk or dark chocolate one so the coloring matches the Oreo cookie and it looks like a complete hat.
- Halloween sprinkles – We prefer the look of flat sprinkles for this, but you can use whatever you prefer.
How To Make Oreo Witch Hat Cookies:

Set the Oreo cookies on a cookie sheet.

Melt the green candy melts according to the bag.
The easiest way to do this is by putting them in a small, microwave safe bowl and microwaving for one minute. Take the bowl out and stir. If the candy melts aren’t melted completely yet, put them back for another 30 seconds and stir. Continue this until they’re completely melted. It should take no more than 90 seconds total.

Add the melted chocolate to a pastry bag with a No 10 tip.
Pipe a circle of melted chocolate in the center (on top of the cookie, not the actual center of the cookie where the cream is), just a bit wider than a Hershey’s Kiss.

Unwrap a Hershey’s Kiss and stick it in the center of the chocolate circle. Push it down a little to spread out the chocolate.

Sprinkle Halloween sprinkles around the green melted chocolate.
Quick note: They sprinkles will stick because the melted chocolate is warm. You don’t need to push them down. If you do,

Continue until you’ve finished all of the cookies.
Set them in a cool place to until the melted chocolate has cooled to room temperature before eating the Halloween witch hat cookies.

Oreo Witch Hat Cookies: Frequently Asked Questions
I prefer to use the Oreo Thins when I’m making these Oreo witch hats. The Oreo is the base of the hat, so you want to keep it proportional to the Hershey’s Kisses, which will be the top of the hat. A regular sized Oreo will just be too big.
Of course, if all you can find are regular sized Oreos, they’ll taste fine.
You don’t have to use Oreo cookies in to make this Halloween cookie recipe. I mean, if you don’t use Oreos, it won’t look like our cookies. But, you could use whatever round, chocolate, packaged cookies you’d like. Keebler Fudge Stripe Cookies are a good option, just turn them upside down so the chocolate side is up.
Of course, if you have a great recipe for homemade chocolate cookies, you could use that too. But, we wanted to keep these simple treats as easy and unintimidating as possible.
Any flavor of Hershey’s kisses will work. They’re all a milk chocolate flavor, though, so they’ll be a little lighter than your cookie. The exception to this is dark chocolate kisses.
Personally, I used the new Milklicious Hershey’s Kisses in these. They have a milk chocolate filling, which makes them — and in turn, your cookies — a little more interesting.
I like using candy melts because they’re so forgiving. You can’t overmelt them, like you can with chocolate chips. And if they harden while you’re working, you can just reheat them.
If you’d prefer, you could use orange candy melts or chocolate or vanilla almond bark. Any of those would work.
I don’t suggest using frosting because the sprinkles won’t stick as well to frosting and you’ll end up with a mess.
I’m obsessed with using piping bags and tips, so I’ll look for any excuse to use them. They’re so convenient. And the piping bags I have are reusable, so they’re super eco friendly.
If you don’t have one, you can cut off the corner of a ziptop plastic bag and use that to pipe the chocolate instead. I did that for a long time before buying piping bags and tips.
You definitely want to use festive sprinkles in Halloween colors for these cookies.
I use confetti sprinkles. The flat sprinkles take up a bunch of space, making a really colorful ring around the hat. Confetti sprinkles come in a variety of colors, but the Halloween color make the most sense. The rod-shaped sprinkles (called Jimmies) work well too.
I wouldn’t suggest using sugar pearls because those can hurt someone’s teeth, especially if there are a bunch of them covering the cookie. And nonpareils (the tiny round circles) are small, so you need a lot of them to cover the rim of the hat.
I cover my baking sheet with a silicone baking mat. You don’t need to, but it’s just easier for clean up because you can just wash the silicone baking mat instead of washing the baking tray.
I always line my baking sheet with a silicone baking mat rather than parchment paper because it’s reusable, which is more frugal and sustainable. You can build your cookies straight on a cookie sheet, though.
Store the cookies in an airtight container on the counter until you’re ready to serve them. You don’t need to refrigerate them.
