I’ve said it before, so this may sound familiar if you’ve been around Drugstore Divas for a while, but I have a friend who is obsessed with chocolate-covered Oreos. Anytime I go to our twice monthly community potluck, I always make sure to bring some type of dipped Oreo if I know he’s going to be there.

I’ve made them around my cousin enough that she has caught the bug and started adding Oreo dipped treats to her holiday platters.

If you remember, she made Oreo cookie snow globes and Christmas ornaments for Christmas.

For Valentine’s Day, she made these ridiculously adorable Oreo cookie gumball machines.

They took her a little trial and error, which means a lot of helpful troubleshooting for when you make them.

And you definitely should make them. Your valentine will love them.

Gumball Machine Oreo Cookies Ingredients:

You can get the full list of ingredients with measurements in the recipe card below.

  • Dots candies – These are the perfect size to be the base of the gumball machine.
  • Vanilla almond bark – It’s so much easier to use this than white chocolate chips. If you burn those, you can’t save them. And if they cool, you can’t reheat them. It’s basically impossible to burn almond bark and you can reheat it, which means you don’t have to rush your Oreo cookies.
  • Oreo cookies – You can use either regular or Golden Oreo cookies. Golden are a little better because you’re using white chocolate, so you don’t have to worry about a thick coating to cover all the chocolate. But choose what you think tastes best.
  • Sprinkles – Any mix of round sprinkles to mimic gumballs work. You also need a heart-shaped sprinkle for the gumball base and a flat sprinkle for the top.

How To Make Gumball Machine Oreo Cookies:

A red Dot candy on a lollipop stick.

Put a lollipop stick through the middle of a piece of Dot candy.

You want to leave the Dot candy about two inches down. The stick will get messy because of the candy, but it’s okay. The Oreo will cover it up.

You can use any color Dot in the package, but using red makes these look more Valentine’s Day-ish.

The squares of vanilla almond bark in a bowl.

Melt the vanilla almond bark according to the package.

The easiest way to do this is to chop the almond bark into smaller pieces and put them in a microwave-safe bowl.

Heat the bowl on high for one minute. Take it out and mix the melted chocolate. Put the bowl back in the microwave and heat and stir at 30 second intervals until the almond bark is melted completely.

Pull apart one of the Oreo cookies and try to keep all of the cream on one side.

Carve a slight lollipop-sized divot in the cream.

Place the lollipop stick with the Dot candy on it into that divot.

Make sure that the lollipop stick isn’t sticking out the top of the cookie and that the Dot candy is resting at the base of the cookie.

Add a little bit of melted chocolate to act as a glue, then stick the other half of the Oreo cookie on top (so now the lollipop stick is between the cookie).

Continue until you’re done with cookies.

Let this cool at least 20 minutes in the refrigerator until the chocolate hardens.

Usually I say let chocolate cool at room temperature because it can bloom in the fridge or freezer, but in this case it doesn’t really matter since you’re not seeing the chocolate anyway.

A dipped Oreo cookie with a red Dot candy on a stick above a bowl of melted white chocolate.

Dip your Oreo cookie back into the white chocolate mixture, just up to the Dot candy.

This is why it’s easier to use vanilla almond bark because you can remelt it for this step. If you used chocolate chips, you would have to melt a whole new batch for dipping.

Gently tap the stick on the side of the bowl to remove any excess chocolate.

A white chocolate dipped Oreo with circle sprinkles on the bottom half and a red Dot candy at the base.

Quickly sprinkle your gumballs onto the melted white chocolate.

You want to keep them mostly at the bottom because most gumball machines aren’t filled to the top (because, you know, people buy gumballs on the way out of the grocery store). And you want them to be a single layer because they won’t stick otherwise.

Slightly press the sprinkles onto the melted chocolate to ensure they stay in place.

Place the cookie on a silicone baking mat-lined baking sheet.

If you don’t have a baking mat, you can use parchment paper or wax paper instead. Personally I prefer a baking mat because it’s reusable (so it’s better for the earth and for your wallet).

Tweezers holding a heart-shaped sprinkle with a dab of white chocolate on it.

Take a small dab of the melted chocolate and add it to one side of the heart-shaped sprinkle onto the Dot to make the gumball slot.

It might be easier if you use tweezers to do this, just to give you a grip on the sprinkle.

Put a small dab of melted chocolate on a round, flat sprinkle and put that at the top of your Oreo cookie to be the top cap of the gumball machine.

Place the cookie back onto the lined baking sheet.

Continue until you’re done with all of the cookies.

Let the cookies cool at room temperature until they’re completely hardened before eating or wrapping them.

And, if you do want to wrap them, we suggest clear lollipop bags with a Valentine’s Day ribbon around it. It’ll look adorable that way.

Gumball Machine Oreo Cookies: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make these ahead of time?

You can make these up to a week ahead of time and they’ll be fine. You can store them in an airtight container on the counter or put it in the fridge. The only worry I have about storing these in the fridge is that the Dot candy may get really hard.

Can you use something other than a Dot candy?

We don’t suggest it. My cousin tried small chocolates, like a Rolo chocolate, for the base, but it was too soft to hold onto the stick and kept breaking.
