I am obsessed with Tajín. Any time I find a new way to use Tajín, I’m gonna do it.

So of course, with our garden cucumbers growing like crazy this summer, I’m trying to find fun, new recipes to use up the cucumbers. And that’s when I decided to sprinkle some Tajín on them.

Now, after I had this brilliant idea to make a Cucumber Salad with Tajín and Lime, I found out this is actually a go to recipe in Mexico to eat to cool down in the summer heat. I thought I invented this tasty side dish, but according to Google, it’s already a thing.

Innovative or not, it’s delicious.

My recipe lists how much of each ingredient you should use, as any recipe would, but just use those values as a guide. Measure with your heart — and your taste buds. And, keep in mind, Tajín has a ton of flavor that’s really concentrated in the dry seasoning itself, so you don’t need to go overboard with it.

This recipe uses fresh cucumbers from our garden. However, if you’re not making this during the summer months, or if you just don’t have a garden, you can just use cucumber from your local grocery stores. If you’re in the grocery store and you can get your hands on an English cucumber, that’s gonna go a little better in this recipe. Those are thinner and have a better crunch than a regular cucumber. A garden cucumber also has that crunch, which just makes this salad taste really fresh.

Cucumber Salad with Tajín and Lime: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tajín Cucumber Salad a traditional Mexican snack?

I always joke that I should have been born Mexican or Italian because I love their food. But, I didn’t grow up Mexican, so I’m not an expert on Mexican food. However, from everything I’ve researched, this Mexican cucumber recipe, known in Spanish as pepinos con chile y limon.

It’s sold by street vendors on the streets of Mexico, along with other snacks like esquites, to be a refreshing snack on hot summer days. Personally, I think it’s a great side dish and serve it as a side for dinner rather than as a snack.

Do you need to peel the cucumber?

We never peel cucumbers, especially when they come out of the garden. Cucumbers look prettier with the green skin around them, and people eat with their eyes. Plus, the skin is really soft, so it’s easy to chew through.

Of course, if you wanted to peel the cucumbers, you could. But, that just adds an unnecessary step to this cucumber dish.

Can you use fresh limes instead of bottled lime juice?

If you have fresh limes, you can absolutely use those instead of bottled lime juice.

One of the reasons this is one of our favorite snacks is because of how easy it is. It takes less than five minutes from start to finish. Using fresh lime juice instead of bottled lime juice is just a little extra effort that’s not really going to change the dish at all.

What can I use instead of Tajín seasoning?

If you can’t find Tajín seasoning in your grocery store, you can either order Tajín online or use this homemade Tajín recipe to make your own Tajín.

How can you store Cucumber Salad with Tajín and Lime?

Store any leftover Cucumber Salad with Tajín and Lime in an airtight container in the fridge. This flavorful salad will last about four days in the fridge.

It is best on the day it’s made through. That’s when you have really crisp cucumbers. The longer the cucumbers sit in the fridge, the more soggy they become. That’s why we don’t make a large batch when we make this.

More Recipes With Tajín:

Arguably, Tajín is the most important part of this recipe. Without the sprinkle of Tajín, you really just have salted cucumbers with a squeeze of lime. So, don’t skip the Tajín.

But, if you now have a full bottle of Tajín powder and you’re trying to figure out what else to do with it, you can sprinkle it on fresh fruit (watermelon is the most common) or on corn on the cob.
