French bread pizza was one of our classic dinners growing up. We got so excited when my mom would make it. My mom was probably excited too because it’s really such an easy recipe.

If you want to take it one step further and make her French bread pizza recipe for Halloween, well, these French Bread Mummy Pizzas are for you.

It’s basically French bread pizza, but with the mozzarella cheese creatively laid so that it looks like a mummy’s wraps. It’s the perfect dinner for Halloween night that the whole family will enjoy. Plus, it’s a really quick dinner (like, less than 20 minutes from start to finish), so you can whip this up, eat it quickly, and get out the door for trick or treating.

 French Bread Mummy Pizza Ingredients:

You can get the full list of ingredients with measurements in the recipe card below.

  • Loaf of French bread – The longer, thinner version of French bread, rather than the shorter, wider version of French bread works best in this recipe.
  • Olive oil – Any oil is fine, but since most people have olive oil at home, we recommend this.
  • Salt
  • Garlic powder
  • Italian seasoning
  • Marinara sauce – Use whatever your favorite brand/type is. If you have homemade marinara, you can use that too.
  • Mozzarella cheese – You need a block of mozzarella, not pre-shredded cheese, for this so you can cut it yourself to look like a mummy’s wrap. You don’t get that illusion with shredded cheese.
  • Black olives – Green olives would work too, but black looks more like a mummy’s eyes in our opinion.

How To Make  French Bread Mummy Pizza:

Pre-heat the oven to 425 F.

A loaf of French bread being cut in half by a yellow knife.

Use a sharp knife to slice the French bread in half.

Then, slice each half into quarters.

Quick note: This is the size we use when we’re making these for as a main course. If you’re making them to bring to a Halloween party, you might want to cut them smaller so they’re more like appetizer size.

Put the bread, cut side up, on a baking sheet.

Pour the olive oil into a small bowl.

Add the salt, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Stir until combined.

Use a pastry brush to brush the seasoned olive oil onto each piece of bread.

Bake the bread for seven minutes until they start to get golden brown.

While they’re baking, cut the mozzarella cheese block into thin strips. Those will be your mummy bandages.

Take the olives and cut those into slices. Those will be your mummy’s eyes.

A spoon spooning pasta sauce onto French bread.

When the pizzas are done, remove them from the oven.

Add a tablespoon of pizza sauce onto each of the bread slices, making sure to spread it around into an even layer.

Place the mozzarella cheese in a diagonal going side to side, varying its angle, to look like a mummy wrap.

The more space you leave between the cheese pieces, the more it’ll look like a mummy because you’ll see more of the red sauce poking through. However, we love cheese so we cover these completely with the mozzarella strips, more like a traditional pizza would be topped.

Add two black olive slices near the top for eyes.

Continue until all of the pizza mummies are done.

Put the pizzas back in the oven for about five minutes until the cheese melts. Keep an eye on them because oven temperature does vary and you don’t want to burn your pizza.

French Bread Mummy Pizza: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use any kind of bread?

These are French bread pizzas. If you use a different kind of bread, well, you won’t be making French bread pizza anymore.

However, you can use whatever you have on hand. We often use English muffins to make pizza and I know a bunch of people use crescent roll dough. Those might need a little less time in the oven because the base is smaller, so just keep an eye on them.

You could use homemade pizza dough to make these too. It’s your dinner, so you use this recipe as a guide. Just know if you want French bread pizzas, well, you’re gonna need French bread.

Can you use shredded cheese to make these pizzas?

We don’t ever suggest shredded cheese when you’re making a recipe where you want the cheese to melt. Bagged cheese has preservatives in it that prevents it from clumping in the bag. The trouble is, those same preservatives stop the cheese from melting properly. So you end up with a coagulated mess rather than melty cheese.

And then, in this case, the shredded cheese won’t make anything that resembles a mummy’s bandages so you lose the entire effect.

If you don’t have a block of cheese in your fridge, you can get away with using string cheese for these. Cut the cheese into strips, or just pull it into strips, and use that instead.

How do you store leftover French bread pizza?

Wait until the pizza has cooled to room temperature. Then, store it in an airtight container in the fridge.

Personally, I wrap it in aluminum foil before putting it in a container. That way, when I want to reheat these in the oven, I just unwrap them from the foil, put that foil on a sheet pan and bake them for about 10 minutes at 350 F until they’re warmed through. It makes for much easier storage and clean up, in my mind anyway.

This is so cute, but I also have to say that it sounds delicious. The olive oil on the French bread would make such a yummy pizza.
