Cats are funny creatures. They can pretty much take care of themselves. Okay, it completely, of course, but they are sure a lot less work than other pets can be. So if you’ve been wanting to get a cuddly pet, a cat is a great idea.

If you do decide to get a new cat this year, this post is a good way to kick off that new relationship. We have four ways to take care of your new cat … starring my parents’ cat Sox. How cute is she? Doesn’t she just make you want to get a cat?

4 Ways To Take Care Of Your New Cat

1. Play with it.
Oh sure, it seems like playing with your new cat is a no brainer. But it’s actually really important for you to do so. If you have toys, like a laser pointer for your cat to chase, that is a great way to exercise him. You probably won’t take your cat out on a walk, so you need to find ways to get him some exercise indoors. And playing with him is great for you too.

2. Groom It.
This is really important, but even more so during seasons when your cat sheds more often. Your cat will use its tongue to groom itself. That’s great, until your cat gets a hairball and you are stuck cleaning it up. To prevent that as best as you can, purchase a cat brush and use it to brush off any excess hair from your cat. The more you can get, the less your cat can ingest, so do everyone a favor and groom him.

3. Clean The Litter Box.
Cats are great about the bathroom. They don’t need to be trained on how to use the litter box. They just know. What the cat can’t do, though, is clean its box; that part is up to you. You want to clean it often because if it gets too stinky, your cat will not use it. And that will create a big mess for you.

4. Feed It Wet Food.
Cats need to stay hydrated. They can do that with water, but some cats (especially males) may not drink enough. So they can supplement their water intake with wet food. That’s why it is important to always stock up and have it on hand.

You can do that right now at Petsmart. The pet store sells a bunch of varieties of Friskies and Fancy Feast wet canned food. If your cat is new, you may not be sure if he prefers fish, beef, or poultry, so, by going to a store that sells a wide variety, you can buy a bunch and see what your cat likes.

Even better, you can stock up and save at Petsmart. You’ll also get additional savings when you purchase 24 or more cans. Head over to your local store to get more details.

My parents’ cat Sox loves beef flavored food, and I stocked up for her recently. She is not my biggest fan (mostly because I love to pick her up and snuggle her when I see her, and cats like attention more on their own terms). But when I showed up with a bag filled with wet food, oh, she was my friend! She enjoyed her meal so much that she was licking her lips in appreciation.

If you have a cat, be sure to leave your tips in the comments, so new cat owners can check them out.

Check out this DIY Cat Food Can Christmas Ornament from www.drugstoredivas.net. #PetSmartCartIf you have a pet, your furbaby is a huge part of your family. You take care of and spoil your pet, just like you do your family. Especially this time of year. Trust me, I get it. I’m the one who “Boo’d” our neighborhood this Halloween and included treats for all the neighborhood cats and dogs.

So of course, that carries through to Christmas. I couldn’t just give gifts to my parents. Oh no. I had to think about their cat Sox too. I was stocking up on Friskies and Fancy Feast at PetSmart for her and had a great idea: I would turn one of the cans into a DIY cat food can Christmas ornament for her too.

It was so easy to make and came out so much cuter than I could have imagined.

What You Need:

  • Empty cat food can, washed and dried
  • Scrap paper
  • Khaki spray paint
  • Black, white, pink, khaki paint chip samples
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pipe cleaner
  • Drill

What You’ll Do:

Pull the wrapper off of the cat food can and bring the can, spray paint, and scrap paper outside. As with any project you spray paint, you want to do it outdoors. I always take mine out into the woods behind our house.

Spray the can with spray paint, then leave it outside to dry for a few minutes.

Spray a second coat on your can and let it dry.

While you’re waiting, go back inside and cut out the face.

You can use card stock to make the face, but I went with paint chip samples. See, I was picking up the spray paint, and it’s in the same section. I wanted to make sure the ears would match, so it was easier for me pick up the samples. Plus, they’re thin and heavy duty, so I knew they would hold up well. Cut out two triangles from the brown paper for ears, two pink triangles for the inner ear and a pink nose, whites for the eyes and black pupils, then black whiskers.

When the spray paint is completely dry, glue the face onto it, and let it dry.

Drill a small hole in the top.

Fold a pipe cleaner in half, stick the “open” ends into the drilled hole, then, twist the two ends together to “tie” the pipe cleaner.

Hang it and enjoy.

You’ll enjoy it just as much as your cat will enjoy her new Friskies and Fancy Feast food from PetSmart.

Sox loves beef flavored food, so I was so happy to know that both brands had a wide variety of beef flavors. There were ones in gravy, ones that were sliced, ones that were paired with other proteins, and so many more too chose from. I was so happy to stock up and save at PetSmart. The are new low prices on wet cat food when you purchase 24 cans or more. Find your local PetSmart here.

Holiday Gift Guide: PetSmart

Holiday Gift Guide: PetSmart

petsmart1I’m gonna be honest: I was stalling with this post.

It came up on my list of reviews for the 2013 Holiday Gift Guide, but I was holding off for hope. Hoping that maybe, just maybe, I’d have good news to add.

It’s been two weeks. The cliche says, “no news is good news” … but not when the news seems to be bad news.

PetSmart generously sent over a bag full of holiday items for Hurricane, my grandma’s cat who you have grown to love every time I mention him in posts (which happens quite a bit).

Well, as you know if you have been following the blog: Hurricane went missing.

hurricane

He went out on November 30, just as usual. Except this time, he didn’t come home.

Two weeks later and he’s still not home.

Oh my heart broke when he didn’t come home the first night. And then the next. And then three days after he had gone missing, this amazing box of toys arrived at my doorstep.

I sent the photo to my mom who said, “Hurricane would love those.”

I’ve been holding out hope that he would return so I could tell you just how much he did love them … but right now, this story doesn’t have a happy ending.

petsmart2

What I can tell you is that the people who have seen the toys have loved them. The variety of toys include Martha Stewart Pets, and everything Martha makes is top notch, even if it is for your pet. There are a bunch of mice with capnip and bells on their tails. I like these better than last year’s Martha Stewart Pets mice that we got for Hurricane because the bell on them didn’t really ring all that much. You had to make sure the entire mouse was shaking in order to here the ring. With the bell hanging off the tail, it’s much better.

The toy I really like is the Kong Glide & Seek. There is a feather toy that glides around and pops out of the holes. Your cat will grab and pounce them (since that’s what cats usually want to do). This actually gives cats a chance to catch it, which will keep them more entertained.

petsmart3

Hurricane has a toy with a ball that is supposed to give cats the urge to hunt and pounce, but since the ball spins so quickly when the cat touches it, and actually catching the ball is impossible, Hurricane gets bored quickly. He won’t even go near that toy anymore.

I know he would absolutely love this Kong toy.

We have a stocking hung with his new toys, in hopes that we have a Christmas miracle and Hurricane comes home to play with all his new stuff.

My uncle actually had a cat who went missing for six months and then came back home. So, it’s been two weeks. I guess we have to wait a little bit longer.

When Hurricane does come home, though, there will be a bunch of toys waiting. And really, it doesn’t matter than one is an adorable Christmas tree that hides a mouse.

2013 gift guide

I’m pretty sure Hurricane won’t know that these are really cute Christmas-themed toys.

If you have a pet who hasn’t gone missing, you definitely want to check out PetSmart’s website. It has a bunch of holiday items for cats, dogs, fish … yes, there are items to add to a fish tank to decorate it for the holiday season. Plus, there are items for humans too, like ornaments and stuffed animals.

Drugstore Divas received these items for this review. All thoughts and opinions belong to Drugstore Divas.

This is a part of Drugstore Divas’ 2013 holiday gift guide. All items in the guide were hand selected by the staff at Drugstore Divas. There was no monetary fee for inclusion in the guide.

Free Samples: Catswell Cat Treats

Free Samples: Catswell Cat Treats

cat treatsMy grandma has the cutest cat named Hurricane. So cute, in fact, that Hurricane got the most Christmas gifts this year because he’s just adorable and everyone wanted to spoil him.

I had to make him a toy box to keep everything in one place.

Of course, he likes to take all the toys out and leave them on the floor. He’s a kitten. He has no idea how to clean.

My mom wants to get him some treats and teach him. I think she’s crazy, but I did find a free sample of Catswell cat treats, so it’s worth a shot.

To get yours, just head over to that link and follow the directions to get your sample.
