Tasty Thursdays: Campbell’s Skillet Sauces

campbellsI’m gonna let you in on a secret. A badly kept secret.

I can’t cook.

Like at all.

The most creative thing I can make is Ramen with egg and I’m really good at French fries. For me, even if it comes out of a bag, I’m bound to screw it up. Pete, on the other hand, makes everything from scratch. He’s at the point where he’s actually made hot sauce and is contemplating making mayo. That really works out for me … not so much for him though because he is stuck making dinner every night [[unless he wants boxed mac and cheese]].

Some nights, he’s tired. And some nights, I try to cook. And for those nights, there’s Campbell’s Skillet Sauces.

The sauces, which come in six flavors, are really simple to make. You brown your protein, add your sauce, cook for a few minutes, and you’re done.

We received four sauces to try. We got Creamy Chipotle with Roasted Corn & Black Beans, Marsala with Mushrooms & Garlic, Thai Green Curry with Lemongrass & Basil and Toasted Sesame with Garlic & Ginger. The ones not provided, in case you’re curious, were Fire Roasted Tomato with Red Bell Peppers & Chiles and Scampi with White Wine & Garlic.

I picked the Marsala to try, even though Pete makes a fantastic Marsala. It was so easy to make. We added hald a box of pasta to it, and the sauce was really light. Pete said that had to do with adding the pasta and that if we just used chicken, it would have been thicker. The taste was really great and the ingredients actually shocked Pete. He’s all about reading the nutrition label and this one passed his test.

We had enough for us to eat and be full … and have enough for Pete to take for lunch the next day and for us to have another dinner. If you think about it, it’s a really cheap meal. The packets retail for $2.49, a pound of pasta is $1 on sale [[and we used half]] and a pound of chicken is $2 a pound on a bad week. So, for about $5, we had two dinners.

The only complaint we had was that there were so few mushrooms in the packet. We will definitely buy fresh mushrooms to add to these next time. And yes, there will definitely be a next time. They were so easy, so good, so economical. Fits right in with our lifestyle.

We have yet to try the other packets, but I’m definitely looking forward to them.

Have you tried these? What do you think of them?
