I’m a big fan of being extra. Like please, I don’t care what the holiday is, I will do the absolute most for it.

But, within reason.

Like this year. My cousin surprised us for July 4th, so I had to do something special for dessert. So I made this super fun Red, White, And Blue Bundt Cake. It’s pretty on the outside, marbled on the inside, and tastes great.

My cousin kept commenting on how fluffy the cake was.

Personally, I knew how easy it was. Because it starts with boxed mix.

Could I make this cake from scratch? Sure. Would it be just as impressive with a boxed mix? Yes. Because the oohs and aahs come from the marbling, not from the flavor of the cake.

So, if you want to make something fun and patriotic for July 4th, but with a lot less work, this patriotic cake recipe is for you.

Red, White, And Blue Bundt Cake Ingredients:

You can get the full list of ingredients with measurements in the printable recipe card below.

  • White cake mix – Any brand of boxed cake mix works for this recipe. You’re going to make the cake according to the package, so check it for any additional ingredients you need.
  • Food coloring – You need red and blue food coloring.
  • Candy melts – You need red, white, and blue candy melts. If you can’t find white, you can use vanilla almond bark.

How To Make A Red, White, And Blue Bundt Cake:

White cake mix batter in a stand mixer bowl.

Make the white cake mix according to the package.

The mix I used needed egg whites, oil, and water, but your boxed mix may vary.

When you’re making it, make sure to not overmix the batter. The less you mix, the fluffier your cake will be.

Three bowls filled with white cake mix batter.

Split the batter into three bowls.

A tube of food coloring in a hand being held over a bowl with white cake batter in it.

Add a few drops of red food coloring to one of the bowls. Stir until combined.

Quick note: A few drops will turn the batter pink; more will turn it red. I used between 10 and 12 drops to get the red I wanted.

Three bowls, one with white cake batter, one with blue cake batter and a spoon, and one with red cake batter and a spoon.

Add a few drops of blue food coloring to one of the bowls. Stir until combined.

Quick note: I only needed three drops to get the blue I wanted.

Alternate adding scoops of the red, white, and blue batter into a prepared Bundt cake pan.

Continue until you’re out of batter.

Quick note: So, what I do, I scoop white, blue, and red, then repeat the pattern through the entire row.

Then, for the next row, I keep the same pattern, but scoop the white on top of the blue, and go around. And I alternate like that until I’m out of batter and rows.

Bake the cake according to the package.

Let it cool at least 10 minutes before taking it out of the Bundt pan.

The way I take it out is by putting a cutting board on the open part of the pan, gently flipping the pan while holding the center of the cutting board, and allowing the cake to slip out.

Transfer the cake to a silicone baking mat-lined cookie sheet.

If you don’t have a silicone baking mat, you can use parchment paper. Personally, I prefer the baking mat because it’s reusable. So it’s more frugal and more sustainable.

But, you need to put something down because you’re going to be adding candy melts on top and if they fall on the cold baking pan, they’re a pain to clean.

When the cake has cooled completely, it’s time to decorate.

Melt the blue candy melts according to the package.

If you’ve never used them before, our tips for using candy melts post will help. But, quick help: put the candy melts in the microwave for a minute and stir. Since you’re not using that many, that should be enough time to melt them with a little bit of stirring, resulting in the rest melting from residual heat.

Put the melted blue candy melts into a piping bag with a No. 4 tip.

If you don’t have a piping bag and set, you can cut the corner off a ziptop plastic bag and use that. I used that method for a long time until a couple years ago when Pete bought me a nice piping set for Christmas. I’m obsessed and use it every chance I get. So, if you bake and decorate often, I suggest getting one.

Finally, melt the white candy melts (or vanilla almond bark, if you’re using that).

Then, stick a trio of Foil Frill Firework Picks in the top.

Do you have to add the firework skewers out of the top? No. But I promise your guests will love it. And, if you want to be a little wild, you can always stick some sparklers out of it instead.

Red, White, And Blue Bundt Cake: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to use a Bundt cake pan?

This cake is based off a recipe I got from a friend a long time ago. She made it in a Bundt pan, so I make it in a Bundt pan. Plus, I have very few recipes that require a Bundt pan, so I love having an excuse to use it.

Now, do you have to use one? No. You could make this in a regular rectangular or round cake pan. But the height of the Bundt pan makes this cake really pretty to look at, and you’re going for that.

Can you use a different flavor of cake?

White cake makes this cake red, white, and blue, which is what you’re going for if you’re making a patriotic cake.

If you use a different flavor of cake, it won’t be white so you’ll be missing the illusion.

Can you add an icing?

If you want to add an icing, go ahead. This is your cake. Personally, I think it’s so sweet how it is. And I think adding an icing really hides the pretty colors of the cake that you worked so hard to achieve. So, I don’t add icing. But, you do what you think is best.

How do you store leftover cake?

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
