I say this a lot, but if you invite me somewhere, I’m going to show up with a cute, themed treat. That’s my thing.

So, when I was deciding what Thanksgiving desserts to bring to my parents’ house this holiday, I knew I had to make these fun turkey cookies. They’re made by dipping cookies and pretzels into melted chocolate and decorating. That’s about it.

Since these are such easy turkey cookies, I asked my five year old nephew if he wanted to help. I thought he would have so much fun, but he dipped two Nutter Butter cookies, made two turkey faces, and he was over it. So, in theory, yes, this is an easy recipe you could make with kids (but if they’re not kids who generally help in the kitchen, you might want to make them while they’re spending time watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade).

Nutter Butter Turkey Cookies Ingredients:

How To Make Nutter Butter Turkey Cookies:

Three squares of chocolate almond bark in a bowl.

Melt two of the pieces of chocolate almond bark in a microwave-safe bowl.

The easiest way to do this is to melt for one minute, then stir. Then, microwave and stir at 30 second intervals until the chocolate almond bark is completely melted.

Stick the top half of the cookie halfway into the melted chocolate. Gently tap it in the edge of the bowl to knock off any excess melted chocolate. Place it on a silicone baking mat-lined cookie sheet.

While the chocolate is still warm, stick in two candy eyeballs.

Two candy eyeballs and an orange mini Reese's pieces candy stuck into melted chocolate on a Nutter Butter cookie.

Between the eyes, add a Reese’s pieces candy for the turkey beak. You want to put the mini Reese’s pieces candy sideways, rather than flat, to make a slim beak.

Continue until you’ve dipped all of the cookies.

If you want, you could melt red candy melts and put them in a piping bag or plastic bag with a corner cut off. Then, pipe a wattle or snood (the wattle is the flesh that hangs from a turkey’s neck and the snood is the part that hangs from a nose. Both are red, both are things people notice but don’t know the real name for).

I had originally intended to make these, but the cookies looked so cute without them that I didn’t feel the need for them. If you do, go right ahead.

Four chocolate dipped mini pretzel twists in a circle.

Now it’s time to mail the tail feathers.

Melt the rest of your chocolate almond bark.

Drop a pretzel in it. Use a fork to knock off any excess melted chocolate. Put the dipped pretzel on a silicone baking mat-lined cookie sheet.

Dip a second pretzel and put it next to the first pretzel with the double rounded side out.

Do this two more times to make a full pretzel circle.

Quickly sprinkle the sprinkles on the exposed portion of the turkey feathers. Let that cool while you’re making the rest of the Nutter Butter turkeys.

Let them cool to room temperature before eating.

Nutter Butter Turkey Cookies: Frequently Asked Questions

How can you store Nutter Butter Turkey Cookies?

Once the cookies have cooled to room temperature, you can put them in an airtight container. Store them in the container for about a week.

These do not need to be refrigerated (and are actually better if you don’t refrigerate them because it can cause the melted chocolate bark to discolor).

Can you use chocolate chips instead of almond bark?

Almond bark is such an easy ingredient. It’s similar to candy melts because if it hardens, you can simply remelt it in the microwave. You can’t do that with chocolate chips. Once they harden, they’re done.

I do prefer the taste of almond bark (which you can get in chocolate or vanilla) to candy melts, so that’s why we recommend using almond bark instead of brown candy melts for this recipe.

Do you need to use a silicone baking mat?

I love my silicone baking mat and use it all the time for a variety of recipes, but especially chocolate. When the chocolate cools, it pops right off the baking mat.

If you don’t have one, you could line the baking sheet with either parchment paper or wax paper instead. Those can’t be reused, though. The silicone baking mat can be, which makes it more sustainable and budget friendly.

What if you can’t find mini Reese’s pieces?

If you can’t find mini Reese’s pieces at the grocery store, you can look for mini M&M’s instead. An orange M&M or yellow M&M would work best.

Another good substitution would be chocolate-coated sunflower seeds.

We don’t recommend using a full-sized candy because it would be too big and wouldn’t be the right proportion for the turkey’s face.

Can you use candy corn for the turkey feathers?

I’ve seen versions of these Thanksgiving turkey cookies where pieces of candy corn are stuck in the Nutter Butter Cookie to make feathers.

That’s cute, but let’s be honest. No one really like candy corn enough to want to eat a half dozen pieces candy corn pieces per cookie. One as a nose, sure. But six candy corn feathers? No thank you.

People do like pretzels, especially chocolate dipped pretzels, so using mini pretzel twists for the feathers will almost guarantee that people eat your sweet treat.
