We got a new (to us) grill a couple weeks ago. It’s a propane grill, which is so much easier to use than our charcoal grill. So we’ve been grilling at least once a week. Pete will usually handle the meats, and I’ll do something like Grilled Mushrooms.
If you haven’t grilled mushrooms, you’re seriously missing out.
These grilled mushrooms are one of the easiest side dishes you can make on the grill. And what’s really great about them is that they’re made in one pan, straight on the grill. We then put a trivet down and serve them right from that same pan. So it’s super easy cleanup.

Grilled Mushrooms Recipe

Grilled Mushrooms Ingredients:
- 8 oz. white or baby bella mushrooms
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon onion powder
- Pepper
How To Make Grilled Mushrooms:
Rinse your white or baby bella mushrooms. Pat them dry with a paper towel.
Slice the mushrooms and put the sliced mushrooms in a grill safe pan.
Cut 2 tablespoons of butter into chunks and spread them around the mushrooms in the pan.
Sprinkle salt, pepper, and garlic powder on top of the sliced mushrooms.
Put the pan directly on the grill and close the grill top.
Grill for ten minutes until the mushrooms are cooked through and caramelized. Shake the pan twice during cooking to ensure they’re cooked evenly.
Serve warm or cooled. They’re delicious either way.
What kind of pan can go on the grill?
To make these Grilled Mushrooms super easy, you just throw the sliced mushrooms in a pan and then put the pan on the grill. But, you have to make sure your pan is grill safe. If not, you’ll end up with a disaster on your grill.
So, what kind of pan can go on the grill?
Pans that are made of ceramic, glass, or metal are safe for the grill. Just make sure that there isn’t any plastic on the pans at all. This includes plastic handles.
Cast iron skillets can go on the grill as well. Just keep in mind that they’re really heavy and get really hot.
And, actually, if you’re going to use a pan on the grill, no matter the material, you’ll want to make sure to use a pot holder (at the very least) to remove it and when you’re shaking the pan. Personally, I would recommend you pick up a non-stick skillet handle for whenever you’re putting a pan in a grill or the oven.
But, back to your options for grill-safe pans.
Metal pans are your best bet in the grill. Glass and ceramic could potentially shatter at high temperatures, so you run the risk of shattered glass everywhere. Personally, we only use metal pans on the grill for this exact reason.
We use our anodized metal pans to cook on the grill. They’re the same set of pans that we use to cook in the kitchen. Since they’re completely metal, with no plastic handles, they’re also oven safe. We actually do put them in the oven for recipes like Spanikopita.
When you’re choosing pans to go on the grill, make sure you’re using pans without any coating. Pans with enameled coating or non-stick pans can get ruined on the grill. The high heat of the grill can potentially ruin the coating.
And avoid using stoneware on the grill. Stoneware needs to be used with an indirect heat source, and you can’t achieve that on a home grill.
Grilled Mushrooms: Frequently Asked Questions
A charcoal grill was one of the first things we bought when we moved into our house. Pete was so excited to get the chance to grill.
The trouble with a charcoal grill is that it takes a really long time to heat up and to cool down. So you really need to plan ahead of time if you want to cook on a charcoal grill. With a propane grill, you just push a button to turn the propane on and off. It’s so much easier.
The timing (10 minutes) to cook these Grilled Mushrooms is based on a propane grill. You can make these Grilled Mushrooms on a charcoal grill, but you may have to adjust your cooking time.
White and baby bella mushrooms are basically the same thing. White mushrooms are just less mature baby bella mushrooms. And baby bella mushrooms are just less mature Portabella mushrooms.
Both white and baby bella mushrooms taste great in this recipe, so you can use whichever you have on hand to make it. If you use white mushrooms, they’ll brown as they cook and look exactly like baby bella mushrooms. So, if you have both, you can just mix them together in the pan and no one will know after they’re cooked.
Grilled Mushrooms are a vegetarian grilled recipe, but not a vegan one. Butter is not vegan, though. So if you wanted to make these vegan, you would have to either use vegan butter swap out the butter for oil.
In recipes like this, where your cooking method is sautéing, you can do a 1:1 swap with butter and oil. So since this grilled mushrooms recipe calls for 2 tablespoons of butter, you can use 2 tablespoons of oil and then follow the rest of the recipe.
In baking recipes, it’s not a 1:1 swap. Instead, it’s a 3:4 ratio of oil:butter.
These grilled mushrooms will taste great if you use oil instead of butter, so if you don’t have butter handy, just use oil. Even if you’re not trying to make these vegan. They will taste a little richer if you use butter, though, making a really decadent side dish from a really simple ingredient.
If you make these Grilled Mushrooms as written, the only WW Points are coming from the butter. Assuming you’re using regular, full fat butter, 1 tablespoon of butter is 5 points. This has 2 tablespoons, so there are 10 WW Freestyle Points in this.

Can you make Grilled Mushrooms using the oven?
So the short answer is no, you can’t make grilled mushrooms using the oven because they’re not grilled. But you can make sautéed mushrooms using the oven. Just use the same ingredients and cook them on the stovetop instead of the grill.
You can also oven roast mushrooms, by putting the oven-safe pan in the oven. The timing will definitely be different if you cook these mushrooms on the stovetop or in the oven, so keep that in mind.
