When we moved into our new house, we, as first-time homeowners, needed a lot of things. Honestly, we’ve lived in this house eight years, and we still need a lot of things.

We had a housewarming party when we first moved in and many of our friends so generously brought us champagne and stocked our bar.

While I was grateful and I really did meant it when I told people their presence was their present, I don’t drink, so champagne was good for Pete‘s mimosas.

So, when I have friends who move into new or just new-to-them homes, I usually give them a gift card so that they can buy something they need to decorate or can just save it for when something inevitably breaks.

But, if you’ve been around Drugstore Divas for a while, you know that I can’t just put a gift card in a card. Oh no, not me.

I would rather take a mini bucket and package a gift card in that. Which, honestly, barely takes more time than sticking a gift card in an envelope but looks so much better.

DIY Mini Paint Bucket Gift Card Holder Housewarming Gift Supplies:

You can get the full list of supplies in the how to card below.

  • Mini bucket — A few of the big name hardware stores sell a mini bucket. It’s a miniature version of the 5 gallon paint buckets. We had one handy from Lowe’s from a freebie offer that I posted, but you can use any brand.
  • Paper shred — The color of paper shred should match your bucket.
  • Gift card — It makes the most sense to buy gift card for the store whose bucket you’re using.
  • Paint sample card — You can grab one of these from wherever you’re getting the gift card.

Start with the mini paint bucket.

These are the buckets that went viral last year. Everyone was buying these with no real idea of what to do with them.

People were using them for things like pencil holders and planters and as snack holders.

I got one from Lowe’s as a free MyLowe’s members gift. And, after staring at it for quite a while, I got the inspiration for this gift idea.

It also helps that in between the time when I got the bucket, and when I almost threw it away, my brother and his family moved into a new home and I wanted to get them a housewarming gift.

So, because mine was free from Lowe’s, that’s what I used.

However, use your creative liberty with it. If you prefer Ace Hardware, but one from there.

Place the gift card into the mini bucket.

Personally, I think a physical gift card works better in this. It holds up better than a printed gift card does.

Fill the bucket, making sure to cover the gift card, with paper shred.

If you have any leftover paper shred from previous gift or craft, just use that. I always say, “Free is my favorite price.”

But, if you’re going to the store to buy some paper shred, I suggest buying a color that matches the bucket. It just looks a little bit more cohesive.

Take a pen and write a message onto the paint sample, then sign your name.

Of course, you could buy a small card to fit inside the bucket. But, paint sample card is free (again, my favorite price) and it fits with the whole new house theme of the gift.

Stick the paint sample card in the back of the bucket, as far as it will go.

Make sure to pull the handle of the bucket up if you want to hand it to your gift recipient that way. If not, fold it down and stick the whole bucket in a plastic treat bag, then close it with a ribbon.

What can you use other than a mini bucket?

If you can’t find a mini bucket in stores, don’t dismay. You can get creative.

Think about other handy items that a new homeowner might need, like a small toolbox or even a tape measure and you can just tape this to the back of.

The vessel is less important than the sentiment.

Other Ways To Package Gift Cards:

Moving into a new home and unpacking all those boxes can be very tiring and your friend might need some coffee to power through. In that case, make our DIY Starbucks Coffee Cup Gift Card Holder.

It’s basically a gift card packaged in a to go cup. But, it looks so much cooler packed it that way then in one of those boring envelopes that you get from Starbucks.
