Chocolate Covered Pumpkin Pretzels Ingredients:
- 6 oz. orange candy melts
- 30 mini twist pretzels
- 10 green candy melts
How To Make Chocolate Covered Pumpkin Pretzels:
Melt the orange candy melts according to the package.
Quick tips if you haven’t used candy melts before. Melt the candy melts in a microwave for a minute. Stir them. Microwave for an additional 30 seconds and stir. That should be long enough to melt the candy melts completely, but if not, you can microwave for an additional 30 seconds.
Drop a mini pretzel twist into the melted orange candy melts.
Flip the pretzel, then remove it using a fork. Be sure to tap the fork on the side of the bowl in order to knock off any excess candy melts. You really just want a thin layer with no orange candy melts in the holes of the pretzel.
Place the pretzel on a silicone baking mat-lined cookie sheet.
Continue until you’ve made all 30 pretzels.
If you’re making them and the orange candy melts start to harden, microwave them for 30 seconds to get them soft again.
You will have leftover candy melts. Put the remaining candy melts in a ziptop plastic bag. Cut a small hole in the corner of the bag to use it as a piping bag (of course, if you have an actual piping bag, you can use that. We suggest the plastic bag as a frugal piping bag alternative).
Pipe zigzag lines of orange candy melts across each of the pretzels. Let the orange candy melts cool.
Melt the green candy melts.
Add them to a plastic ziptop bag, then cut the tip to make a piping bag. (Again, if you have a piping bag, you can use it instead.)
Pipe the green candy melts in the center of the top of the pretzel to make it look like a stem. Let the green candy melts cool completely.
The candy melt should take about 20 to 30 minutes to cool completely. You’ll want to do this on a counter, not in the fridge. This way, the candy melts will cool and harden as a solid color. If you cool them in the fridge, there’s a high chance of discoloration (which would make these look awful and defeat the purpose).
Pack the Chocolate Covered Pumpkin Pretzels in an airtight container after they’ve cooled.
Chocolate Covered Pumpkin Pretzels: Frequently Asked Questions
These are not pumpkin flavored. They just look like pumpkins. If you want them pumpkin(-ish) flavored, you could purchase pumpkin spice-flavored candy melts. They’re orange, so they’ll look the same, but they’re obviously not vanilla flavored like candy melts generally are.
You absolutely can. To turn this from a pumpkin to a Jack-O-Lantern by simply adding candy eyeballs.
What you’ll want to do is follow the tutorial through where you make the orange drizzle. At that point, drop two candy eyeballs into the matching holes. They’ll be able to rest on the candy melt drizzle.
Then, once the drizzle has hardened, you can drizzle the green candy melts just as the recipe says.
We absolutely stand behind using candy melts for these. If you’ve never used them before, check out our Tips For Using Candy Melts.
What’s great about candy melts is that you’re able to reheat them after they’ve hardened. So if you’re taking your time making these and the orange candy melts harden before you’ve dipped all 30 pretzels, you can just reheat it in the microwave and it’ll be perfectly melted again.
You can’t do that with something like orange baking chips. Once those harden after being melted, they’re done.
Plus, with baking chips, you run the risk of overheating them and burning them. That doesn’t happen with candy melts. And, if the candy melts are old and don’t melt as great, you can instantly repair them with a bit of coconut oil. You can’t do that with baking chips.
If you don’t want to pipe the green stem using melted candy melts, you could use green M&M’s or green sunflower seeds. Stores actually sell bags of green-only M&M’s, and you can order green-only sunflower seeds online, but it’s more frugal to use candy melts so that’s what I did. Plus, I just love how the candy melt stems look.
Store any leftover chocolate covered pumpkin pretzels in an airtight container for about two weeks.
You can make these up to two weeks ahead of time. Just make sure to store them in an airtight container in the fridge after they’re done.
