I love mozzarella sticks. So when we went to a brewery in Charleston and there were Japanese mozzarella sticks on the menu, I was super excited to try them. I expected them to be similar to potatorella, which is (basically) mozzarella cheese in a potato batter that’s deep fried.

It wasn’t.

Instead, it was a mozzarella stick wrapped in a wonton wrapper. So, very different than what I was expecting. But, still tasty. Of course, though, as soon as I opened the container, I thought, “I could make these.” And so, I did.

And now, if you follow this Wonton Mozzarella Sticks recipe, you can make them too.

I cooked these in the air fryer because that was just so simple, but you could deep fry these or bake the in the oven.

And, these are so much easier to make than traditional homemade mozzarella sticks. I’ve made those before, dredging a cheese stick in flour, egg, and breadcrumbs, then freezing it, then frying it in olive oil. It’s delicious, of course, but a lot of work. The best part of these is that you don’t have to worry about any dredging and you can make them right away. No freezing required.

Twelve pieces of mozzarella cheese sticks on a blue cutting board.

Cut the mozzarella cheese sticks in half.

A piece of a cheese stick on a wonton wrapper.

Lay one wonton wrapper down on a plastic cutting board with a point facing towards you.

Place one cheese stick half almost in the center of a wonton wrapper, slightly closer to the bottom corner than the center.

A wonton wrapper with one corner rolled up.

With the tip of your fingers, dab some water between the point and the cheese stick.

Roll the bottom side of the wrapper around the cheese stick, making sure to push the point under the cheese stick.

Dab a little bit of water around the edges of the wonton wrapper.

One edge of a wonton wrapper folded in.

Fold both ends in.

A wonton wrapper folded to look like an egg roll.

Continue rolling until you get to the other point.

Add a little extra water to get the point to stick down.

Twenty four egg roll-shaped wonton wrappers.

Set the mozzarella stick aside and continue until you’ve wrapped all the mozzarella cheese stick halves.

Ten wonton mozzarella sticks in an air fryer.

Place them in a single layer in the bottom of the air fryer.

Spritz them with cooking spray and cook at 370 F for about eight minutes, shaking the basket halfway. If they don’t easily move around when you shake the basket, use a pair of tongs to flip them over. They’re done when the wonton wrapper is golden brown.

Also, quick note: Don’t skip the cooking spray. That’ll help them crisp up and get golden (which means you can eliminate the need for an egg wash) in addition to making it so the wonton wrappers don’t stick to the bottom of the air fryer basket.

If this is your first time making them, start checking the air fryer at around six minutes to make sure that the wrappers are still closed and the cheese isn’t oozing out all over the air fryer basket.

Serve them with warm marinara sauce for dipping.

Air Fryer Wonton Mozzarella Sticks: Frequently Asked Questions

How do you keep mozzarella sticks from exploding in an air fryer?

You really want to make sure that the wonton wrapper is folded tightly around the piece of string cheese. Use a dab of water to secure the wrapper. Any open spaces are where the melted cheese can escape.

Can you use egg roll wrappers instead of wonton wrappers?

Egg roll wrappers and wonton wrappers are made from the same ingredients. The only difference is the size.

You could use egg roll wrappers to make these, if you wanted to make gigantic mozzarella sticks. If you wanted to make ones the size of traditional mozzarella sticks, you’ll want to stick with wonton wrappers.

You cannot, however, use spring roll wrappers to make these. Spring roll wrappers are very different. They’re a lot thinner and need to be soaked in water before using them, which doesn’t really work in this recipe.

Where can you buy wonton wrappers?

Wonton wrappers are sold in the produce section of a grocery store, near the tofu. If you can’t find them, you can order wonton wrappers online.

How can you store leftover Wonton Mozzarella Sticks?

Allow the wonton mozzarella sticks to cool to room temperature. Then, store the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for about three to four days.

How can you reheat these?

For best results, reheat already cooked wonton mozzarella sticks on a baking sheet in the oven at 350 F for about 10 minutes, until the cheese is heated.

Can you make these without an air fryer?

If you don’t have an air fryer, but you want to make these wonton mozzarella sticks, you absolutely can.

We picked air frying because that’s just so much cleaner and easier, but you can choose a different cooking process. You can either deep fry them in an electric skillet in hot oil for just about 60 seconds. You’ll really watch to watch these as they’re deep frying because they’ll finish cooking very quickly. Let them sit on paper towels before serving.

You can also arrange them on a single later on a sheet pan and bake them in the oven at 350 F for about 10 minutes, flipping halfway.
