You can really use the grill for anything. We all think about grilling hamburgers and hot dogs. And if my dad is grilling, I always ask him to grill my hot dog bun.
So, it absolutely makes sense that you can grill garlic bread as well. But, have you tried it? Probably not. But you should. And this recipe will show you exactly how to do that.
We used store-bought artisan bread for the grocery store to make this recipe. If you wanted, you could use homemade bread, but that’s more work than we intended. The way we make it, the recipe takes a mere 15 minutes from start to finish. If you start baking bread, well, that makes this easy recipe not so easy.

Grilled Garlic Bread Recipe

Grilled Garlic Bread Ingredients:
- 1 loaf artisan bread
- 5 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 5 cloves of fresh garlic
- 4 sprigs fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 oz. pecorino romano cheese
How To Make Grilled Garlic Bread:
Pre-heat a propane grill to 350 F. (Your grill temperature will vary because grills are fickle, but you want to try to keep it around 350 F if you can).

Cut the loaf of bread in half lengthwise.
Pour two tablespoons of olive oil on each half and use your fingers (or a pastry brush) to distribute it evenly.
Put the bread, olive oil side down, directly on the grill grates.
Grill, with the grill top closed, for 10 minutes.
While that’s grilling, rough chop the garlic cloves into small pieces.
Pour the remaining tablespoon of olive oil into a grill safe pan. Add the garlic.
Grill the garlic for five minutes, stirring occasionally.
You can grill the bread and the garlic at the same time to make this a little faster.
Remove the bread and the pan of garlic from the grill.
Sprinkle the salt on top of the bread.
Spread the grilled garlic evenly on top of the bread.
Add the chopped parsley evenly across the top of the garlic.
Grate the pecorino romano cheese on top of the bread.
You can drizzle with a little finishing oil before using a bread knife to cut the bread into 3/4-inch slices.
Quick side note: We always recommend using a bread knife to cut the slices of bread. If you try and use a flat or non-serrated knife, it will tear the crispy bread rather than cut it and the result will be really flat slices.
Variations:
Garlic Bread With Smoked Garlic Butter
This garlic bread doesn’t use any butter. But, if prefer the taste of butter to olive oil, we have a great smoked garlic butter recipe.
You would grill the bread according to this recipe and make the smoked garlic butter as well. Put the grilled bread onto a cookie sheet and spread the garlic butter mixture on top. Heat it in the grill for another five minutes until the butter is melty. It’s so good that way.
It does have a little bit of a smoky flavor because you are using a smoker tube to make the bread, making it a really different side dish.
Grilled Garlic Bread: Frequently Asked Questions
We prefer grilling on a gas grill because it’s so much easier. You don’t have to wait forever for it to come up to temperature and you don’t have to wait forever for the charcoal to cool. Plus, it’s much easier to just turn the dial on the grill than filling it with charcoal and lighting it.
However, if all you have is a charcoal grill, you can definitely make this garlic bread on that grill instead.
If you can’t find pecorino romano cheese in your local grocery store, you can use parmesan cheese instead. A block looks nicer as far as presentation because you can make those pretty cheese curls on top. Shaved parmesan (or even grated parmesan) will also work.
This grilled garlic bread recipe will work with nearly any type of bread. So choose your favorite sourdough bread, Italian bread, loaf of French bread … anything that looks like those types of bread.
We don’t recommend white bread because those just won’t work.
Garlic can sometimes taste a little bit bitter. Roasted garlic doesn’t have that bitterness.
For traditional garlic bread, you usually put the raw garlic on the bread and heat it in the oven, so that cooks out the bitterness. Since you’re not doing that with this recipe, we recommend grilling the garlic.
No one wants to bite into a mouthful of raw garlic, so you have to cook it somehow.
Store any leftover grilled garlic bread in aluminum foil, then put that foil in an airtight container or bag. It’ll last about three days that way.
When you’re ready to reheat it, simply open the foil onto a cookie sheet and heat it in the oven. Or, if you have an air fryer, you can reheat it in there.
What To Serve With Grilled Garlic Bread:
Garlic bread is the perfect side dish for pasta dishes with a lot of sauce, like Linguine with Clam Sauce.
But, I always say if you’re grilling your main courses, you should grill your side dishes too. So, with that in mind, if you’re going to go through all the work of grilling garlic bread, serve it with a grilled main dish like Beer Can Chicken. We actually did that when we made the version of the bread in these photos and it went so well together.
