Pete loves bagels. Oftentimes, when we have visitors from New York who offer to bring bread products to us, I’ll ask them to bring down bagels for him. He loves them for breakfast, and we just can’t get great bagels here. That’s part of why I’m so thrilled about these 2 Ingredient Dough Flax Seed Bagels.
I love this 2 Ingredient Dough. I’m pretty obsessed with it. It’s really easy to make, which means you can have fresh bread all the time.
And fresh bagels.
When Pete tried one, he was so happy. He told me right away how great they were, then actually texted me later to tell me they were fantastic.
They get all the delicious nooks and crannies that bagels get and toast up really well. My only complaint is that the dough recipe only makes four bagels. That will last us two days. And that’s because there are only two of us here.
If you’re making these for a family, keep in mind that one batch is only four bagels. So if you need or want more, you’ll want to double or triple the batch.
2 Ingredient Dough Flax Seed Bagels Recipe
2 Ingredient Dough Flax Seed Bagels Ingredients:
- 1 batch 2 Ingredient Dough
- 2 pinches of salt
- Garlic powder
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup flax seed
How To Make 2 Ingredient Dough Flax Seed Bagels:
Pre-heat the oven to 350.
Make the 2 Ingredient Dough.
Quick note: This is a recipe using the dough, not for the dough. But, if you don’t feel like clicking through: Make 2 Ingredient Dough by mixing together one cup of self-rising flour and one cup of non-fat Greek yogurt.
Add two pinches of salt and garlic powder into the dough. Kneed the dough gently, then form it into a ball.
Cut the dough into quarters.
Take one quarter and roll it into a ball. Then, roll that into a log. When it is even, put the two ends of the dough together, then pinch them to form the bagel.
Scramble the egg in a shallow bowl.
Dip the entire bagel in the egg as an egg wash.
A lot of people put the egg wash on the top of the dough, but if you want that bagel “crunch” with every bite, you want to dredge the entire bagel in egg.
Put the egg-washed bagels on a foil-lined cookie sheet. Sprinkle flax seed on the top of the bagels.
Bake for about 30 minutes, until the bagels are golden brown. Start checking them around 28 minutes, as oven times can vary.
Keep them on the cookie sheet until they’ve cooled slightly.
Remove them from the foil, then let them cool completely.
What can you substitute for flax seeds?
I love flax seeds. They’re a really great energy booster, which is why I love having them first thing in the morning. You can buy flax seeds at your local grocery store, or you can order flax seeds online.
If you don’t have or like flax seeds, you can use sesame seeds or Everything But The Bagel seasoning on top. You can leave them plain too.
You can also follow my mom’s 2 Ingredient Dough Everything Bagel Hack and put the seasoning inside, instead of outside, so you don’t lose the majority of your toppings while you’re eating or baking the bagels.
How many points is the 2 Ingredient Dough bagel recipe?
If you’re following Weight Watchers, you need to count Weight Watchers points.
These 2 Ingredient Dough bagels are only 3 Freestyle Points each (when you make four per batch). The points all come from the self-rising flour.
If you use non-fat Greek yogurt, that’s a ZeroPoint food. The egg and seasoning are ZeroPoint foods as well.
Are 2 Ingredient Dough Bagels keto-friendly?
If you’re looking for a keto-friendly bagel, this isn’t it. Half of the base of bagels is self-rising flour, which has just about 100 grams of carbs per cup. That makes these bagels about 25 grams of carbs, just from that.
So, if you’re following keto, you’re going to want to skip the self-rising flour and make 2 Ingredient Dough Bagels with almond flour (or a similar flour) instead. Check out this keto-friendly bagel recipe, which uses almond flour, instead.
What’s the best way to eat 2 Ingredient Dough Bagels?
The best way to eat these bagels is to cut them in half and then toast them in the toaster.
When I’ve used the 2 Ingredient Dough recipe to make bread bowls, the inside was cooked through but doughy. I’m not a fan of doughy bagels at all, and toasting them eliminates that. Plus, it enhances the crunch of the bagel.
You can top your bagels with anything else you like. A big hit is Everything But The Bagel seasoning), but keep in mind that if you are adding anything sweet or cheesy, you will be changing the number of Weight Watchers Freestyle Points.
Eggs are free with the new Weight Watchers Freestyle program, though, so if you top this with a fried egg, it’s a healthy and filling breakfast.
Can you make them more bagel-y?
Is bagel-y a word? I don’t know. But if you’ve had a good New York bagel, you’ll notice that these 2 Ingredient Dough bagels are different than that. They’re not as bagel-y because they lack that “chew” that you get from a New York bagel.
These are more of a sourdough taste too.
But, you can combat those two things.
To make them more bagel-y, you can use a bread flour instead of self-rising flour. I’ve never seen a self-rising bread flour, so you’ll have to use the recipe in this post to turn bread flour into homemade self-rising bread flour.
Then, if you don’t want the sourdough taste, you’ll need to remember those two pinches of salt from the recipe. Don’t skip them and don’t skimp on them.

Two ingredient dough is such a popular recipe because it comes together so easily. You don’t need to worry about the dough resting or worry about waking up the yeast — because there isn’t any.
For those reasons, we use it as often as we need dough. A couple of our favorite 2 Ingredient Dough recipes are:
