So, I’ve been on this kick of Making frozen lemonade. I’ve been experimenting for the last few summers with different varieties.
So of course, I had to try an orange lemonade version.
I used mandarin oranges because they’re smaller so they’re a little bit easier to process in the blender.
But here’s the thing about this lemonade. Each piece of mandarin orange is covered in skin. That doesn’t blend that well so this isn’t as smooth as other lemonades that we’ve made. Unless you peel each segment before freezing it. That’s super time-consuming. You could blend this a little more to break up the skin, however Then you run the risk of heating up the ingredients too much so you have a slushy rather than a frozen drink.
So just keep that in mind when you’re making this so that you are not cut off guard if it texture is a little different than what you’re expecting.
But, the skin on mandarin oranges is softer than the skin on full science of oranges so that’s why we use the mandarin in this. You could try using a regular orange, but you may end up with lots of unsavory bits.

Frozen Orange Lemonade Ingredients:
You can get the full list of ingredients with measurements in the recipe card below.
Mandarin oranges – We explained above why we use mandarin oranges instead of typical full-size oranges.
Water – Tap water is fine.
Honey – We suggest using 100% honey for the sweetener.
Lemons – Fresh lemons, work better than bottled lemon juice.
How To Make Frozen Orange Lemonade:

Peel all of your mandarin oranges.
Just a quick note in case you skipped the introduction above: You can completely peel the mandarin oranges so you peel the skin away from the pulp. That will give you a smoother lemonade. You don’t have to do this, because it is kind of time-consuming, but if you don’t, you’ll get a lot of texture from the skin in your lemonade.
In the photos with this post, we didn’t peel the mandarin oranges so we could show you the simplicity of the recipe, however, I personally prefer it if I do peel them.
Put the mandarin oranges in a freezer safe bag and freeze them overnight.
You can break the mandarin oranges in half or into thirds before freezing them if it fits in your freezer better.
The next day, or whenever you’re ready to make this lemonade, add the frozen mandarin oranges to a blender.

Add the water to the blender.
The colder the water the better because you don’t want warm water to start defrosting your mandarin oranges. That will affect how frozen the lemonade is.

Add the honey to the blender.

Add the lemon juice to the blender.
I say this every time I talk about citrus, but here’s Pete’s hack. Microwave the lemon for 15 seconds. Take it out and roll it on the counter. Then cut it in half and squeeze out the juice.
By heating it and massaging it, you’ll get out more of the juice than if you just tried to squeeze a cold lemon.
When you’re squeezing the lemons, just make sure that you take out any pits that may squeeze out.

Blend until smooth or until you reach your desired consistency.
Just be careful to not over blend. When you blend, the ingredients inside the blender heat up, which means your frozen fruit is melting. And so you run the chance of it getting more watery than icy.

Pour the frozen lemonade into a glass.

Garnish with any leftover fruit.

Frozen Orange Lemonade: Frequently Asked Questions
Store any leftover lemonade in the fridge in a glass. It will last better in glass, which will hold the cold better. If you store it in plastic, it’ll melt quicker.
You could use agave syrup instead of honey since it’s also a liquid sweetener. You may have to adjust the amount of agave that you use, though, because it tastes different than honey.
We don’t recommend using granulated sugar because it won’t melt in the cold lemonade, so you’ll end up with a really grainy drink.
I haven’t tried using frozen orange juice concentrate to make this frozen lemonade, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. If you do try it, be sure to let us know so we can update this.
