DIY “Lucky In Love” Shamrock Shiplap Sign

This DIY "Lucky In Love" Shamrock Shiplap Sign is a fun St. Patrick's Day craft. It should cost you about $2 to make if you have the paint already.

Last week, my friend sent me a photo of the cute things she got on her shopping trip. And one was an adorable St. Patrick’s Day sign. Of course, I had to recreate it with my own spin on it. That’s how this DIY “Lucky In Love” Shamrock Shiplap Sign was born.

The sign she bought from T.J. Maxx was adorable, but you know how that store is. It’s like a scavenger hunt. Just because she found it in her store doesn’t mean mine will carry it.

So I did what any normal person with a few free hours on the weekend would do. I made my own dupe.

I’ll put a side-by-side later in the post and you can tell me which you like better. But, for $1 (which is all mine cost), I like mine just fine.

It only cost me $1 for the stretched canvas from the dollar store. I had all the other supplies at home already.

If you’re unfamiliar with shiplap, it’s a wooden wall that was originally used to waterproof ships. Shiplap was found to be really good against wind, so people started using it for siding on their homes.

And then Pinterest made it a really popular for interior walls, for aesthetics more than function.

Shiplap is known for it’s really long, rectangular, white pieces of wood, laid perpendicularly with a small gap between the pieces. So, that’s the look we’re emulating with this shiplap sign.

How To Make A DIY “Lucky In Love” Shamrock Shiplap Sign:

This DIY "Lucky In Love" Shamrock Shiplap Sign is a fun St. Patrick's Day craft. It should cost you about $2 to make if you have the paint already.

Flip the stretched canvas over. Carefully remove the canvas from the wood frame. Don’t worry about the staples that are there to hold the canvas down. Those can stay.

Flip the canvas right side up. Use a paint brush to paint the canvas using the light green acrylic paint.

Take a napkin and wipe away any excess paint. This will leave a thin coat of green paint on the canvas and will look as if it was painted with watercolor.

Set it aside to let it dry.

Draw a four-leaf clover on the piece of scrap paper. Use the scissors to cut it out.

Place it on top of the rectangular foam board and trace it.

Cut the four-leaf clover out from the foam board.

Use a ruler to make marks two-inches apart on the foam board. Make these marks on both sides (you should have four on each side). Then, connect the dots with a pencil to make four straight lines across the foam board.

Erase the pencil line, leaving only a very faint line behind.

Dip the toothpick in the black paint and use it to paint the lines. Set this aside to dry.

When everything is dry, lay the foam board on top of the canvas. Use a pencil to gently write the words “Lucky In Love” in the canvas.

Move the foam board. Use a black marker to trace over the words.

Center the words within your shamrock. Use a pencil to trace around the edge of the foam board. Use the scissors to trim the canvas a slight bit in from the lines you just drew.

Put a thin layer of glue on the back of the foam board. Press the canvas on to it. Let it dry.

Flip the wood so the staple side is down. Wet a napkin, then pour black acrylic paint on the napkin. Rub the black paint around the wooden frame. This will give the appearance of stain without you actually needing to buy wood stain. Set it aside to dry.

Put glue on the back of the wooden frame (the side with the staples) and affix the foam board on to it. Let it dry.

Display it when it’s completely dry.

Tips For Making A DIY “Lucky In Love” Shamrock Shiplap Sign:

If you trust your drawing skills, you can draw the clover directly onto the foam board. You can’t erase on the foam board, so you really only get one chance to draw it right.

I drew mine on scrap paper first, but you do you.

If you have frayed edges around your four-leaf clover, take the X-Acto knife and “file” the inside down. It will take a little bit of patience, but you’ll be able to smooth the edges down really well.

You won’t be able to do this after the foam board is glued down to the canvas, so be sure to get it as flat as you want before you start gluing.

You can use a thin paint brush to paint the lines to make the foam board look like shiplap, but I feel steadier with a toothpick. Conversely, if you can’t paint a straight line with a paint brush or a toothpick, you can draw these lines with a black marker.

How can you display this sign?

If you want to display this sign, you can just lean it up against a wall. If you want to hang it, you can purchase a small sawtooth picture hanger and hammer or screw it (depending on the type you buy) into the back of the foam board (or the wood, depending on how high up your foam board is).

Make sure the teeth are facing down, so when you put a nail into the wall, they’ll be able to grip onto it.

I make a lot of signs using these stretched canvases, like our DIY Funny Bathroom Sign, so I use sawtooth picture hangers quite often. If you’re making this sign, I definitely suggest buying a bag of multiple sawtooth picture hangers rather than just buying one. You’ll be happy to have them later.
