For some reason, when we went to visit my parents for Christmas this year, my mom had a ton of apples in the fridge.
So she kept trying to come up with a different ways to eat apples to finish them.
She was hosting company when we were there, and we were brainstorming ways to serve the apples to her guests without it just looking like an apple on a plate.
So we came up with this cream cheese fruit dip.
It’s a play on the cream cheese dressing on the grape salad at Chicken Salad Chick, if you’re familiar with that. But instead of coating the fruit with it, it’s served as a dip.
It was a huge hit and definitely something you should make if you’re looking for a fruit-forward snack.

I really like making dips when we’re hosting guests. It just seems like something you should serve at parties.

Cream Cheese Fruit Dip Ingredients:
You can get the full list of ingredients with measurements in the recipe card below.
- Cream cheese – We use full-fat cream cheese in this. Neufchatel cheese (which is basically low-fat cream cheese) is terrible, in my opinion, so I never use it.
- Sugar – Granulated white sugar gives a thinner dip. Powdered sugar makes a thicker dip. Choose whichever sugar you want based on the consistency of the dip that you prefer. You’ll also need brown sugar as a garnish. That’s optional, but looks more appetizing with brown sugar on top.
- Pure vanilla extract – Vanilla adds a sweetness and depth of flavor to the dip.
- Nuts – Chopped almonds or pecans are an optional garnish,. You can skip them, but the dip looks more complete if you add it.
How To Make Cream Cheese Fruit Dip:

Leave the cream cheese out to warm to room temperature, about 30 minutes.
Quick note: You don’t have to do this, but it cuts down on your mixing time if you do.
Put the softened cream cheese in a large mixing bowl.
You could also make this in a stand mixer if you have one.
Use a hand mixer to mix the cream cheese until it’s fluffy.
You want it to be really smooth, have an even consistency, and almost double in volume.

Small aside: Using an electric mixer will heat up the ingredients a little. This also happens when you use a blender. So, even if you forget to bring your cream cheese to room temperature, the act of mixing will warm the cream cheese and get it to the consistency you’re looking for. It just makes it a little longer.
With that being said, this will take about 5 to 7 minutes if you have softened cream cheese and a little over 10 minutes if you’re using cold cream cheese.
You want to make sure there aren’t any lumps because the sugar will not incorporate into them and you’ll get these really weird pockets of cream cheese in your dip.

Add in the white sugar.

Add in the pure vanilla extract.

Mix with the hand mixer again until everything is incorporated.
The sugar will cause the cream cheese to thin a little bit. That’s okay.

Let the fruit dip chill in the fridge before serving.
If you let it sit overnight, you get this really thick beautiful dip. If you only chill it for 30 minutes to an hour, you have a lighter thinner dip.

When you’re ready to serve, scoop the dip into a serving bowl and serve it with your favorite fresh fruit (we served it with my mom’s aforementioned abundance of apples for these photos).

Before serving, sprinkle the dip with brown sugar and chopped nuts as a garnish.

Cream Cheese Fruit Dip: Frequently Asked Questions
You want to serve this dip chilled and using the mixer will heat it up, so you definitely wanna make it at least 30 minutes before you wanna serve it.
We mentioned this above, but if you let it sit overnight in the refrigerator you’ll end up with a really thick dip.
If you only have an hour or so to let this chill, powdered sugar will give you a thicker dip and granulated white sugar will give you a thinner dip.
You can dip anything into this fruit dip.
In these photos, we serve it with apples that are soaked in water with a little bit of lemon juice added. Any seasonal fruits, animal crackers, or wafer cookies are good too.
If you’re going to use berries, like strawberries or raspberries, or sliced bananas, make sure to put out toothpicks so you can easily dip the fruit without sticking your fingers in the dip.
We also served this as a substitute for vanilla sauce on top of bread pudding, and it was amazing that way as well.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. It’ll be good between four and five days that way.
