Whenever I’m making cookies and I can make two similar but different cookies at the same time, I’m game. It adds variety to your cookie platter without adding too much extra work.
And when you’re talking about Christmas cookies, you definitely want some variety.
So, if you’re already making our Oreo Snow Globe Cookies, or any of our other Christmas-themed dipped Oreo cookie recipes, you should make these Christmas Ornament Oreo Cookies at the same time.
They’re very similar to the slow globe cookies except that the chocolate candy that accompanies the cookie is placed on the top rather than on the bottom.
Other than that, it’s pretty similar so you can easily make both of them at the same time.

If you bought too many Oreo cookies and you’re looking for more ways to use them, check out our list of Christmas Oreo Cookie Recipes. It’s filled with a bunch of ideas.

Christmas Ornament Oreo Cookies Ingredients:
You can get the full list of ingredients with measurements in the recipe card below.
- Oreo cookies – Double stuffed Oreo cookies work best because they’re a little thicker, so they fit on the candy better. You can use any brand of cookies (we say “Oreo” but mean it in a generic sense).
- Almond bark – Vanilla almond bark is better for dipped cookies than white chocolate chips because it melts easier and doesn’t burn if you melt it for too long. Plus, if it hardens, you can remelt it. You can’t do that with chocolate chips.
- Rolo candies – These look so much like ornament caps.
- Edible glitter – This makes the “ornament caps” look metallic.
- Pure vanilla extract – This is to adhere the edible glitter to the chocolate. You need pure vanilla extract, not imitation.
- Decorations – We used sanding sugar, nonpareil sprinkles, and royal icing decorations. You can choose whatever you like.
How To Make Christmas Ornament Oreo Cookies:

Melt your vanilla almond bark according to the package.
If you’ve never used this before, here are my quick instructions: Cut the almond bark up into smaller pieces and put them in a microwave-safe bowl. Then microwave it on high for one minute. Take it out of the microwave and stir. If it’s not completely melted, put it back for another 30 seconds and stir, continuing at 30-second intervals until it’s melted completely.
Because you’re using a bunch of almond bark, it may take about two minutes until it’s completely melted.
The good thing about using almond bark rather than chocolate chips is that even if you microwave it for a little bit longer than it needs, it won’t burn. Chocolate chips will burn and there’s no fixing them.

Drop the Oreo cookie into the melted almond bark.
Flip it over so both sides are coated.
Use a fork to take the cookie out of the melted chocolate. Gently tap the fork on the side of the bowl to remove any excess chocolate.

Place the cookie onto a silicone baking mat-lined baking sheet.
I say this all the time, but if you don’t have a silicone baking mat, you can use parchment paper. I just prefer a silicone baking mat because it’s reusable, so it’s better for the Earth and better for your wallet.
You definitely have to put something down though because the melted chocolate will stick to the cookie sheet and get stuck there. It’ll be very hard to remove and almost impossible to remove the cookies and keep the bottom of chocolate intact.

Immediately get ready to decorate your cookies.
You have two options now.
The first is the easier option. Just sprinkle the entire front side of the cookie with whatever sprinkles you’re using.
Personally, I think sugar sprinkles or nonpareil sprinkles look best. You could do a combination of nonpareil sprinkles and sugar pearls. Those sugar pearls look really pretty, but they’re hard to bite through.
These are your cookies so just choose whatever sprinkles you like or have available.
The second way you can decorate is to take a royal icing decoration and gently place it in the center of your cookie. Then sprinkle your sprinkles of choice around whatever portion of the cookie is not covered by the royal icing decoration.
Either of these work. It just depends on how detailed you want to be.
Continue dipping and decorating until you’re done with all of the cookies.
Set them aside to cool completely.
The timing of this will depend on how cool it is is your home, but I would rough estimate that it takes about an hour.
You don’t want to put these in the fridge because changing the temperature of the chocolate that quickly can cause it to discolor.

While they’re cooling, you can work on the top of the ornament.
Pour edible glitter into a bowl. Add a couple of drops of pure vanilla extract.
Quick reminder: You have to use pure vanilla extract; imitation vanilla extract won’t work.
Stir completely until the two ingredients are combined and you get a paintable glitter.

Use a food-grade paintbrush (one that you only use for food) to paint the gold onto the Rolo chocolates. Make sure that you’re also painting the top and bottom of the chocolate because they’ll be visible.
Add a bit of melted white chocolate to the bottom side of the Rolo candy.
Using the chocolate as glue, stick the Rolo chocolate to the top of the ornament.

Two quick things.
First, be mindful of the direction that your decorations face to ensure that you’re putting the ornament cap the right way.
Also, if the chocolate doesn’t sit right, you can use a knife to shave down a little amount of chocolate on top to make a flat surface for the chocolate to sit.
It may be easier to cool them standing on the Rolo candy so they don’t roll around.
Continue until you’re done with all the cookies and let them dry completely before serving or storing.

Christmas Ornament Oreo Cookies: Frequently Asked Questions
Chocolate-dipped Oreo cookies last anywhere between two and four weeks if you keep them in an airtight container. So, you can absolutely make these ahead of time.
That leaves you time to make the rest of your Christmas treats. This season is super busy, so making these ahead of time can be really helpful.
I don’t love the taste of candy melts. They taste pretty waxy and unappealing. So anytime I’m making dipped Oreos, I use almond bark. If I want to make it different colors, I add gel food coloring to the almond bark and stir.
Using candy melts is a little easier, but the cookies won’t taste good and you don’t want all your hard work to end up in someone’s trash.
If you have a steady hand, you can absolutely hand pipe decorations using a candy melts instead of using the royal icing decorations.
You would want to add the sprinkles around the outer circle immediately after dipping the cookies. Then let them cool completely. When they’re cool, melt your candy melts and pipe.
You just wanna make sure that the white chocolate is completely cool before you decorate or you run the risk of getting fingerprints or other marks on your cookies.
