When most people think about wallpaper, they think about really terrible tacky designs from the 70s. No one wants that now.
Honestly, no one wanted it much past then either.
I remember my parents taking down wallpaper in our family house and it just being the most daunting task. I don’t know how they did it because I was young and no help, but I do remember them using a tiny knife at the corner to start to peel it in hopes that it would come off in large chunks.
So when Pete and I moved into our home, I absolutely did not even consider wallpaper.
And then we started going to fancy restaurants. And they would either wallpaper the entire dining room or wallpaper an accent wall in the bathroom and paint the rest of very dark, moody color. And that completely changed my view on wallpaper.
If you think the same thing, this updating your home with wallpaper post will help you decide.

Wallpaper is just one way to update your home. A less permanent way is to hang photos.
If you need a little help with that, our post about how to create a gallery wall is perfect for you.

Decide On A Room (Or rooms)
You have a lot of options when it comes to wallpaper. You can wallpaper and entire room, wallpaper an accent wall, or accent in pieces.
It all really depends on what room you’re wallpapering.
For a dining room, wallpapering the entire room makes it feel really special. In a bedroom, you might want to wallpaper just the bottom half of the walls, then paint the top half (that’s how my childhood bedroom was).
In a bathroom, an accent wall of wallpaper across from the toilet in a half bath or facing the inside of the bathroom in a full bath works best.
And in a living room, adding some wainscoting and putting wallpaper inside there is stunning.
So, the first thing you have to decide is where you want to add wallpaper and how much you want to add.

Choose A Pattern
The pattern you choose mostly depends on your style and vibe, but you also want something modern and timeless.
If you’re doing a huge wall or the entire room, you don’t want a very tight pattern. You want something that’s large so it doesn’t repeat that often.
In a small room, you should look for a vertical pattern so it stretches the room.
A bold pattern works best if you’re just doing an accent wall.
And, if you’re really creative, you can choose custom wallpaper. That link goes to Photowall, where you can actually upload your own photo and have it turned into wallpaper, which is just as amazing as it sounds.

Pick The Type Of Wallpaper
I really wanted to add wallpaper to our home, but I didn’t want to deal with the little scalpel and glue and other nonsense comes with wallpaper.
And then I found out about peeling stick wallpaper. That’s basically a large sticker that you stick on the wall. And when you wanna take it off, you just peel it off.
It’s so easy and renter friendly. Peel and stick wallpaper comes in a ton of designs that will absolutely fit your vibe — especially if you’re noncommittal. You can order online or I’ve even seen it in Walmart, so you don’t need to know an interior designer to find it.
If you know you want a more permanent change, or if you’re updating a bathroom with a shower, you want permanent wallpaper. In a bathroom, the steam from the shower could heat the peel and stick backing and cause it to peel off. So, in that room, a permanent wallpaper is better.
