I like casinos. My family loves gambling, and I inherited that trait. When Pete and I lived in New York, he lived in Yonkers, where Empire City Casino is. The casino was, literally, less than five minutes from his apartment. Once a month, the casino would give us free play, and once a month we would head to the casino to play.

Since we moved to North Carolina, a new casino went up not too far from where I lived in New York: Resorts World Catskills in Monticello, New York. It opened in February 2018 with over 100,000 feet of gaming including over 1,600 slot machines, and 150 live tables. Yup. I’m sad to be missing out on this.

My friend Michelle goes often, since it’s only an hour away from home, so she collected everything you need to know about Resorts World Catskills for us.

If you’re visiting Resorts World Catskills with your family, you’ll be excited to know that there’s an indoor water park as part of the campus. Find out more about it in our The Kartrite Resort & Indoor Waterpark review.

Resorts World Catskills (888 Resorts World Dr.) is part of the Resorts World family, which includes casinos in Bimini in the Bahamas, the Las Vegas strip, and three in New York: Hudson Valley, New York City (which is technically in Queens, New York), and Catskills.

This review is going to focus only on Resorts World Catskills, not any of the others.

The Catskill Mountains outside of a hotel window.

When you enter the Resorts World Catskills hotel, the first thing you notice is everything is clean and it doesn’t smell like cigarettes like so many older casinos do. Weeknight evenings are pretty busy, but not crowded. Check in goes fairly quickly.

For safety purposes, when you get into the elevator you have to scan your room card then press the number of the floor you are heading to.

It’s an all-suite hotel with rooms ranging from 600- to 2,000-square feet. When Michelle stayed, she booked a luxury king suite, so if you book a different room type, your experience might be a little different.

The hotel room is beautiful. And, relatively affordable. You can actually book through Groupon to get a great deal on the room rate.

The bathroom is incredible. There’s a waterfall shower head, a separate toilet, and a makeup area with a sit-down vanity with amazing lighting. Plus, there are plenty of towels. And the towels aren’t flimsy at all. (Quick note: Last time Michelle was there, she needed more towels. She asked the housekeepers for a few extras, as you usually do at a hotel, and was told she had to call down to the front desk staff to ask for anything. So keep that in mind).

The sinks are amazing, and the shampoos and soaps smell so good (Side note: They’re from luxury brand Molton Brown).

Now, the rest of the room.

There are floor-to-ceiling windows spanning the whole front of the room, so if you open all the curtains, you get an incredible view of the Catskill Mountains. It’s a beautiful area, so it’s nice that the hotel designers took the mountain setting into account when designing the rooms

The TV is a giant flat screen that is kind of awkwardly placed to the left of the bed, but the beauty of the Catskill Mountains is better then anything you’ll see on flat-screen TVs anyway. The TV offers movies, so many channels — and music. You could also order room service directly from the television.

The bed feels brand new, comfortable, and had large pillows that relax you instantly.

There’s a desk and couch in the room too, so if you needed to relax in the room or get some work done while you were there, you have the space to do it. And, if you do have to work, the free Wi-Fi is awesome. You don’t have to reconnect at all after the first time (which yes, reconnecting is very first world problems, but if you’re someone like me with limited data, this is very helpful).

Each room has a little doorbell outside, which was nice, but the housekeeping staff still knocked.

The coffee machine was hidden in a drawer, so be sure to look for it if you want a fresh cup of coffee in the morning.

Some of the hotel rooms have private pools, but if you choose not to book one of those, there are two pools in the hotel that all overnight guests can use. There’s an indoor pool and and outdoor pool deck. Just be prepared with something warm to wear if you’re watching your family swim. The hotel does turn on the air conditioning in the pool area, so it gets cold.

There’s a 21+ pool area, away from the all ages pool area, in case you’re not traveling with kids and want an adult only experience.

Outdoor games on a lawn with a sunset and the Catskill Mountains behind them.

That’s the main hotel. On the Resorts World Campus is The Alder at Resorts World Catskills, which is the second hotel on the casino’s property. It’s named The Alder after the alder tree, which you can find in the Catskills.

There were two interactive games for golf and baseball when you first walk in that looked like a lot of fun. If you really like that, you can actually book a Topgolf Swing Suite in The Alder. Other than that, though, the rooms are typical hotel rooms. They’re not suites. You can book a queen or king room, both of which are 320 square feet.

The Alder hotel is pretty small, but if you book here, you have access to the amenities at the main hotel, including the pool, fitness center, and Crystal Life Spa.

Inside The Alder is the Mexican restaurant Dos Gatos Cantina, so you don’t have to leave that property to eat. The bar inside Dos Gatos faces outside, and it’s open and really nice. There was outdoor seating, plus badminton and other outdoor games, like a giant Jenga game, for guests to use. There are fire pits, which are perfect to sit at to watch the sun go down.

Resorts World Catskills is a hotel casino, so now it’s time to talk about the casino.

The casino itself has 100,000 square feet of gaming space. The slot machines and live table games are enclosed in the middle of the resort and you have two or more security guards checking ID to get in.

There are your typical slot machines, electronic table games, and video poker (Pete’s favorite since the last time we went to Las Vegas). There’s a poker room and a sports book. The sports book counter is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, but the kiosk is open 24/7.

The outside of the restaurant Good Friends Market in Resorts World Catskills.

Outside of the gambling area are a few bars and restaurants.

There’s Cellaio, an Italian-inspired steakhouse from chef, TV personality, and onion hater Scott Conant; Louts, a stunning restaurant serving Chinese delicacies; 24/7 Bistro, serving classic comfort food (which is frustratingly only open 24/7 on Friday and Saturday); Good Friends Market, serving Asian street food (and, I believe, is 21+); and the RW Food Hall.

Food halls are getting so popular in Las Vegas, replacing the standard buffet. At a food hall, you’ll find different counters with fast food-like offerings, like pizza and fries and burgers. It’s basically a food court at the mall, just with elevated prices (and not usually elevated offerings). I really, really like casino buffet, so food halls bum me out.

Three boys in a waterpark.

Also within the Resorts World Campus is The Kartrite Resort & Indoor Waterpark, an indoor waterpark with water slides, a lazy river, and more. It isn’t attached to the resort itself, but there is a shuttle that runs between the two buildings so you can easily get from one to the other.

The Kartrite has its own accommodations with all-suite rooms. The rooms include four waterpark tickets (although you can book a Room Only Rate if you don’t want to go to the waterpark, but want to stay at the resort because it’s located a half mile from Monster Golf Club. Staying at The Kartrite gets you an exclusive tee time for the course).

You can actually book a day trip to the waterpark without being hotel guests. So that’s a great way to get the whole family out of the house for a good time if you have nothing else planned.
