New Deli: Sandwiches & Strawberries In Fayetteville, NC

I love dessert. Pete will always joke that I eat candy for breakfast. I don’t. But I will have desserts any time I get a chance. So when I found out New Deli in Fayetteville, NC had chocolate-covered strawberries and chocolate apples on the menu, I knew we had to go.

I took my parents to New Deli when we went to Fayetteville for a Fayetteville Woodpeckers game. The menu is huge. So, if you’re like us and from out of town, go with as many people as you can. Then, you can try a bunch of menu items in one trip.

That will, of course, mean you’ll have to share your chocolate-covered strawberries. Which I got with my sandwich. As a side.

You guys.

Most places give you a side of fries or chips or the veggie of the day. At New Deli, you can get a side of chocolate-covered strawberries.

Of course I went with that. Wouldn’t you?

“Have you been here with Pete?” my dad asked me as we were looking over the menu.

“No,” I said, then added, “Why?”

Well, Pete loves pizza. So my dad was going to order a pizza and save some to bring home to Pete. But we went to New Deli on day 1 of our three day trip, so we weren’t sure how it would keep.

So my dad ordered with his taste buds in mind.

Each of us ordered a different sandwich (although there’s more than just sandwiches on the menu). My dad went with a French Dip Panini, my mom ordered a Daville Panini (steak with provolone and white American cheeses, green peppers, red onions, and portobello mushrooms), and I had a 49th Street Flat Grilled Cheese (with bacon, brie, spinach, avocado, and a raspberry vinaigrette).

Our food came out and everything was delicious. My mom’s was so good that I actually traded half my sandwich with her. And that’s saying a lot because I don’t usually eat steak. So I was sure that I would try a bite of hers and leave her to it. Nope. After one bite, I claimed half of it for myself.

To be perfectly honest with you, we were a little surprised at how much we liked New Deli. But wait. Maybe I should back up a minute.

When we went over the summer, according to the menu, there were two New Deli locations in Fayetteville, NC. There was one at 2153 Valleygate Dr. Ste. 1 (that we went to) and the one downtown at 225 Green Street that’s closed (according to Yelp). We didn’t go to that one, and now it seems we don’t have the chance, so this is completely based off the shopping center location.

When you walk in that one, it’s cute but it’s very busy. There are a ton of tables and each chair has a kitschy cushion on it. There are some that look like slices of trees, some that are parts of a hamburger, and — my favorite — some that are cat faces. The restaurant is filled with neon colors, flamingos, and lots of decor that you would find at a beach house.

And, off to one side, there was a full Instagram set up. There was a backdrop behind a bench, waiting for Instamodels. And the bench had props like a chocolate-covered strawberry pillow, a chocolate-dipped apple pillow, a faux wooden log, and more.

There was a lot going on.

And then there’s that huge menu. It’s long. Like 15-pages long. And I’ve watched enough episodes of Kitchen Nightmares to be wary of large menus. Gordon Ramsey preaches a small menu so you can focus and do a few things right rather than trying to do a lot of things right.

But, based on what we ate, New Deli can do a lot of things right.

So don’t let the menu or the decor deter you. Please. You’ll be missing out.

Everything is really affordable too. None of our sandwiches were more than $8 each. A couple of the pizzas are $9.99, and that’s the top of the menu. That’s great for lunch. Especially when you consider that the grilled cheese comes with two sides and either a soup or salad. That’s a ton of food, enough that you could actually eat half of it and save half for the next day.

We were so full from our meal, we didn’t have any room for apples. But don’t worry. New Deli is prepared for people who want apples but have run out of stomach. The restaurant will cut up your apple and put it in a plastic to go container for you.

We went with a Turtle (a Granny Smith apple topped with caramel, chocolate, and pecans) and a Reese’s (a Granny Smith apple caramel, chocolate, and peanut butter). We snacked on them during the rest of our trip, then brought the leftovers home to share with Pete.

No pizza from New Deli for him, but he did get apples.
