National Chicken Wing Day: Frequently Asked Questions
National Chicken Wing Day is a national holiday that celebrates just wings. That’s it. Nothing more.
It started on July 29, 1977 in Buffalo, New York — home of the Buffalo wing.
There are two main wing rivals in Buffalo: Anchor Bar and Duff’s. And, when you’re there, you must pledge your loyalty the one you think is the better place for wings. Just like Pat’s and Geno’s Cheesesteaks in Philly. Them’s the rules.
Then-Buffalo mayor Stan Makowski proclaimed that first Chicken Wing Day in 1977. It became a national holiday a few years later.
This is not to be confused with International Chicken Wing Day, which is July 1. Restaurants in the United States don’t celebrate on this day and rather wait for the day later in the month.
