Homemade cookie platters are so popular this time of year. They’re the quintessential neighbors gift. And no cookie platter is complete without homemade chocolate chip cookies. But not just any cookies. Cookies made from a homemade chocolate chip cookies recipe that was passed on.

Like this one, passed to me from my friend Beth.

These are her go to chocolate chip cookies. And trust me, if she likes them, they’re amazing because she is a tough critic.

She’s also one tough cookie.

Oh. What? Too far? You just want the cookie recipe, not the cookie plays on words. I get it. We’re all busy this time of year. No time for jokes. But make time for cookies.

How To Make Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies:

Set the eggs on the counter. Allow them to sit out for 30 minutes to bring them to room temperature.

Whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and corn starch. Set aside.

Melt the butter.

Add the brown and white sugar to the melted butter. Whisk together.

Whisk in the whole egg, egg yolk, and vanilla to the butter and sugar mix.

Combine the wet and dry ingredients.

Gently stir in the chocolate chips.

Cover the chocolate chip cookie dough and refrigerate for two to three hours (or up to three to four days).

When you’re ready to bake, pre-heat the oven to 325 F.

Remove the chocolate chip cookie dough from the fridge and let it soften at room temperature at least ten minutes.

Scoop the dough into rounded balls.

If you use a cookie scoop, you’ll guarantee that all the cookie dough balls are the same size. That way, they’ll all bake at the same rate and they’ll all be finished at the same time.

If you try to eyeball the dough balls, you’ll end up making cookies that aren’t uniform in size and some may overbake. So definitely use a cookie scoop if you have one.

Place the dough balls on a cookie sheet.

The dough will spread as it bakes, so be sure to place the dough balls far enough apart that allows for them to spread.

Personally, I always use a silicone baking mat-lined cookie sheet when I bake cookies. The cookies bake evenly there, just like they do on parchment paper. Plus, the cookies slight right off easily.

But, parchment paper isn’t reusable and a baking mat is. So, I use a baking mat to be a little more eco-friendly (and frugal).

Using these methods means you don’t have to butter the cookie sheet. Buttering the cookie sheet can add butter to your cookies and cause them to bake differently and spread more. Baking is really precise, so even a tiny bit of an additional ingredient can change the final product. So any time you can omit adding anything, even a tiny bit of butter, is great.

Bake for 12 minutes until the cookies are golden brown.

Subsequent batches may bake a little quicker.

Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies: Frequently Asked Questions

What can you do with the leftover egg white?

This homemade chocolate chip cookies recipe uses one full egg and one egg yolk, leaving you with one egg white. You can use it to make scrambled egg whites, or you can use it to make Cloud Bread or Christmas Tree Meringue Cookies.

Those recipes use egg whites and not the yolk, so it’s a great way to use up your extra egg white from this recipe.

Can you freeze homemade chocolate chip cookie dough?

Luckily, this homemade chocolate chip cookie dough freezes really easily. So you can make the dough ahead of time, when you have time, and bake the cookies in the future.

The best way to freeze cookie dough is to roll the cookie dough into balls, then put them on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet. Put the entire cookie sheet in the freezer for about an hour until the cookies are hardened.

Then, put the dough balls in a freezer-safe bag. You can keep them frozen for up to three months.

How do you bake frozen cookie dough?

What’s great about frozen cookie dough is you don’t need to thaw it or let it sit out before baking it. You can just pull it out of the freezer, place it on a cookie sheet, and bake.

When you bake frozen cookie dough, add about two to three minutes to the baking time to compensate for the frozen dough.

How can you store leftover cookies?

Honestly, I don’t know what leftover fresh baked cookies are. I’m kidding. Kind of.

If you have leftover cookies, wait until they’re completely cooled, then put them in an airtight container.

Put them in the fridge and they’ll last for about a week. If you leave them on the counter, they’ll be good for about three days.

Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies Variations:

Add Peanut Butter Chips:

Instead of using 1.25 cups of chocolate chips, use 3/4 cups of chocolate chips and a half cup of peanut butter chips to make peanut butter chocolate chip cookies.

Use Chocolate Covered Candies:

Instead of using traditional chocolate chips, use chocolate covered candies. Substitute 1.25 cups of chocolate covered candies for the chips.

If you can find Christmas colored chocolate covered candies, that would make these really festive for Christmas.
