Chocolate Strawberry Dessert Kabobs Recipe

We had a block party recently, and every house on the block was bringing a meat, a side, and a dessert.
Pete decided to spatchcock a chicken on the grill for our meat and I was set on grilled Mexican corn salad for our side. For our dessert, I wanted something that went with the barbecue theme but wasn’t something we had to grill.

And that’s when this Chocolate Strawberry Dessert Kabobs recipe came to me. They’re on skewers, which just looks cute for a barbecue. And they’re easy to make ahead of time, so you don’t have to worry about assembling a dessert while you’re flipping food on the grill.

And, they’ll hold up in the heat. Because most backyard barbecues are held during the summer, you want to make a dessert that won’t melt while it’s sitting out.

It’s the perfect summer treat. No baking (since these are made with Dunkin’ Munchkins) or barbecue needed.

These Dessert Kabobs are so easy because you use Dunkin’ chocolate Munchkins to make them. Since those are already made when you buy them at your local Dunkin’, you don’t have to worry about baking homemade donut holes. So these dessert skewers don’t require you to turn on the oven and heat up your home.

Chocolate Strawberry Dessert Kabobs Ingredients:

How To Make Chocolate Strawberry Dessert Kabobs:

A strawberry cut in half.

Wash your strawberries. Cut the leaves off to leave a flat side of the strawberry.

A Chocolate Munchkin on a skewer.

Start by putting a Dunkin’ chocolate Munchkin on the sharp side a skewer. Slide it down to the flat end, leaving about 3/4 of an inch of space.

A strawberry on a skewer.

Add a strawberry through the skewer, sticking the point through the pointed part of the skewer.

A marshmallow on a skewer.

Add a marshmallow to the skewer so it matches up with the flat end of the strawberry.

Skewers with Chocolate Munchkins, strawberries, and marshmallows on a tray.

Repeat. Add another Dunkin’ chocolate Munchkin, a strawberry, and a marshmallow.

Set the dessert skewer on a tray.

For the next skewer, vary the pattern. Add a strawberry first, then a marshmallow, then the Munchkin. You don’t have to do it this way, but it looks prettier on the tray if you do.

When you’ve made all the skewers, make sure they’re touching on the tray. It’ll make the next part easier.

Melted chocolate in a bowl.

Melt the chocolate chips in a microwaveable safe bowl.

Put the melted chips in a plastic ziptop bag. Cut off the corner.

Chocolate being piped over Chocolate Strawberry Dessert Kabobs.

Use the ziptop bag to pipe the chocolate over the dessert kabobs. Drizzling from top to bottom on an angle works best. You can drizzle up to two at a time.

If you have more chocolate when you get to the last kabob, go back to the first one and add more chocolate drizzle. If you drizzle in the same direction as the first chocolate drizzle, it looks more professional. Drizzling haphazardly tastes the same, but it doesn’t look as good.

Dessert Kabobs Variations:

Strawberry Shortcake Dessert Kabobs

Instead of Dunkin’s chocolate Munchkins, start with a pound cake or Dunkin’s powdered sugar Munchkins. Alternate pieces of those and strawberries. Then, finish them with a white chocolate drizzle.

Sweet And Savory Southern Dessert Kabobs

Layer Dunkin’s new (and delicious!) cornbread Munchkins. Layer them with pieces of homemade cowboy caviar. You’ll want to do three pieces of cowboy caviar, which you can skewer through the middle, per cornbread Munchkin.

Chocolate Strawberry Dessert Kabobs: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use another variety of Dunkin’s Munchkins?

The only way to make these Chocolate Strawberry Dessert Kabobs is to make them with chocolate Munchkins. If you want to change up the recipe and use other Munchkins, the powdered sugar or the new cornbread Munchkins would work.

The glazed Munchkins are a lighter Munchkin and wouldn’t really work in this. Since it’s softer, you’ll sort of “deflate” it with the pressure you’ll need to get the skewer through it. The Munchkin won’t “bounce back” and these dessert kabobs won’t be as nice as they are with the harder, more cake-y Munchkin varieties.

Can you use frozen strawberries in dessert kabobs?

I would recommend using fresh strawberries because they don’t have extra moisture like frozen strawberries do. Frozen strawberries would end up defrosting and “leaking” over the marshmallow and tray while they’re sitting there.

And, if you defrost the strawberries overnight to try to avoid that, you’ll end up with softer strawberries that won’t skewer as well.

Can you make dessert skewers ahead of time?

You can make these dessert kabobs the morning of your barbecue, then let them sit in your fridge until you’re ready to serve them.

We don’t recommend making them the night before because the moisture from the strawberries will leak onto the marshmallow tops and soften them.
