Hot sauce lovers are shaking in their collective boots because Sriracha production is sped to a halt.

Not screeching to a halt. It’s rushing towards that stop.

Right now, you may still be able to find your favorite Huy Fong Foods Sriracha sauce in stores. But production is paused, stock is limited, and stores are selling out. It’s like the great toilet paper shortage of 2020, but this might last longer due to “severe weather conditions” according to an email the company sent customers.

So what can you do during the Sriracha shortage? Eat one of our favorite alternatives.

These aren’t all an identical swap. And some are pretty different. But they’re all delicious alternatives that you can try while you’re waiting for your favorite to come back in stock.

Bushwick Kitchen’s Weak Knees Gochujang Sriracha

Bushwick Kitchen’s Weak Knees Gochujang Sriracha is arguably my favorite hot sauce. It’s a mild hot sauce that focuses more on flavor than heat. It has a sweetness to it that makes it really palatable, but it still adds a kick to your meals.

If you’re looking for a good one-to-one swap, this is it.

Bushwick Kitchen sells a couple other Sriracha sauces in its Weak Knees line: super spicy and curry. We like the super spicy (but I don’t like it as much as the regular) and we aren’t fans of the curry (even though we like curry itself), so keep that in mind when you’re ordering.

K Pop Foods’ Korean Chili Sauce

Don’t let the cartoon-like labels on the K Pop Foods’ sauce bottles deter you. These sauces are no joke. And don’t let the colored pepper on the label steer you wrong as well. Even the one pepper rating (which is supposed to be the least hot) is hot.

The Honey Glaze Sauce has a one pepper rating, but it’s hot.

It’s not the sub for Sriracha, though. That’s the Korean Chili Sauce with a two pepper rating. The label says it’s “sweet and tangy with a kick,” and that’s a big kick. A little bit of this goes a long way.

Sticker Mule’s Mule Sauce

Sticker Mule, which is known for making stickers, came out with a hot sauce. I know. That’s a weird sentence. And it feels like something that doesn’t go together. But we once went to a coffee shop where the owner was planning on selling hot tubs in the back and scooters in the front so really, anything can go together. Even stickers and hot sauce.

And this is actually a really good hot sauce. Pete loves it and he’s really hard to please.

It’s made with habanero, yellow scotch bonnets, and bhut jolokia (which is a fancy way to say a ghost pepper). Mule Sauce is a hot sauce in the truest meaning of the word. It’s hot.

It’s more like a Frank’s hot sauce than Sriracha, so it’s not quite an identical swap during the Sriracha shortage, but it’s definitely worth a try. And, once you try it, it will definitely replace your traditional Tabasco sauce.

A bottle of Bachan's Original Japanese Barbecue Sauce.

Bachan’s Hot & Spicy Japanese Barbecue Sauce

Bachan’s Original Japanese Barbecue Sauce isn’t a hot sauce and it isn’t Sriracha. Let’s get that out of the way first. But, if you use Sriracha in recipes to add a little flavor, rather than just as a drizzle on top of a recipe, you might be pleasantly surprised when you add this instead.

The original sauce is basically a teriyaki sauce, and you would use it like that.

But, if you want a Sriracha swap, try Bachan’s Hot & Spicy Japanese Barbecue Sauce. Yes, it’s still a teriyaki base, but, rather than the traditional teriyaki flavor, you get a touch of spice, making it closer to Sriracha than the original version.

A bottle of Mike's Hot Honey.

Mike’s Hot Honey

Mike’s Hot Honey is the furthest from Sriracha. BUT. Mike’s Hot Honey is delicious. It’s spicy and sweet and my favorite pizza drizzle.

Is it Sriracha? No. Does it have any Asian flavors in it? Also no. But, if you just want to try something completely different while you’re waiting for Sriracha to come back in stock, this is a really tasty condiment.

Sriracha Shortage: Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no Sriracha?

There’s not no Sriracha right now, but we’re headed there.

According to the company that makes Sriracha, Huy Fong Foods, said it’s due to “severe weather conditions.”

The chili peppers that are grown for Sriracha are only grown during the first third of the year. There’s usually enough to make it through the year. But this year, due to a long dry season and other factors, there weren’t as many chili peppers grown. Less grown, less harvested, less Sriracha.

Is Sriracha still being produced?

Yes, Sriracha is still being produced … but production is suspended now until possibly the fall.

Where is Sriracha sauce made?

Huy Fong Foods, the maker of Sriracha sauce, is located in Irwindale, California.

Can you make homemade Sriracha?

You can make anything at home. I haven’t personally tried this homemade Sriracha recipe, but it has a ton of five star ratings. If you try it, let us know how it came out.
