Alton Brown once said, “Always have a purple breakfast” and it was something we took to heart. He didn’t mean adding a ton of food coloring to your pancakes, rather, he meant having berries for breakfast.
So we started making breakfast smoothies.
They’re a delicious breakfast idea, and something you can completely vary based on your fruit choices. Plus, smoothies are a great grab-and-go breakfast because you can prepare it the night before and pull it out of the fridge when you wake up, making your morning really easy.
One of our favorites is this mango banana berry smoothie.
The berries are the main flavor, but you need the mango for some sweetness and the bananas for the consistency. You’ll also need to add some sort of liquid to this to thin is out because blended fruit isn’t that easy to sip on its own.

Mango Banana Berry Smoothie Ingredients:

- Banana – The banana acts as both a sweetener and a thickener to give the smoothie a creamy texture.
- Mango – The mango adds a sweetness to the smoothie, plus gives it a nice tropical flavor to balance the berries. We use a fresh mango, but you could use frozen mango instead.
- Frozen blackberries – Frozen berries add a coldness to the smoothie without needing to chill it or add ice (which will melt and dilute the flavor). We like the way the tart blackberries balance the sweetness in the mango, but you could substitute other berries (raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, etc.) if you prefer those.
- Liquid of your choice – You have a lot of options here. Water or coconut water add hydration; oat or almond milk is a dairy free option for a creamy base; plain Greek yogurt or kefir adds protein.
How To Make A Mango Banana Berry Smoothie:
We make these smoothies in two single serve blender cups that are attachments for our blender. If your blender doesn’t have similar those attachments, you can make it in the main blender pitcher then pour it into cups.
That’s actually what we do with our homemade frozen lemonades.

Peel and slice a banana.
Divide the pieces between two blender cups.
Peel and cut the mango.
Divide the pieces between two blender cups.

Fill the blender cup to the max fill line with frozen blackberries.
It’ll be about 3/4 of a cup of berries per blender cup.
Quick note: A lot of people add chia seeds, flax seeds, protein powder, or collagen powder to their smoothies to add protein and make them stay fuller longer. If you want to do that, you can add them here.
My mom adds spinach to her smoothies, so you could add that here too. Personally, I think that changes the flavor a lot and takes away from the sweetness of the smoothie. So, you might want to add honey, agave syrup, or a splash of vanilla to the smoothie too to bring back some sweetness (unless you like the green smoothie taste and then, in that case, add your spinach alone).

Pour the liquid into the blender cup until the cup is filled to the max fill line.
If you prefer a thicker smoothie, you can add less liquid.

Blend everything together until the liquid is thin enough to sip.
If your smoothie is still too thick after you blend it, you can either blend it a little longer to break the fruit up more or add a little more liquid to the blender cup to thin it out.
Pour the smoothie into a cup and enjoy.

Mango Banana Berry Smoothie: Frequently Asked Questions
You can absolutely make this ahead of time. We usually make smoothies the night before, then put the blender cup in the fridge for the next day’s breakfast.
This is actually a great idea.
You can portion the cut banana and mango in a freezer bag with measured frozen berries. Then, when you’re ready for a smoothie, you can just add the bag of frozen fruit to a blender cup with some liquid.
This is good to do if you’re not ready for a smoothie, but your bananas are getting overripe.
If you do this, though, know that frozen fruit will change the consistency of the smoothie a little, so you may have to play around with the amount of liquid you’re adding.
The type of liquid you choose is going to be based on your taste and budget.
We use water, which is the cheapest liquid. It doesn’t add any extra flavor and actually dilutes the sweetness a little.
You could use coconut water instead, which adds flavor. Both of those options give you a thinner smoothie.
Oat or almond milk keep this smoothie dairy free and give it a creamier texture. Greek yogurt or kefir also give it a creamy texture, but those aren’t vegan options. The latter two will give the smoothie a little more of a tangy taste, so you might want to add a sweetener if you are adding those.
Yes, you can use fresh berries instead of frozen. We just prefer to use frozen because they’re cheaper. Plus, using frozen berries means they’re available year round, so you don’t have to wait for blackberry season to make this.
