These DIY Leprechaun Hats Decorations are a cute, easy St. Patrick’s Day craft. They’re made from upcycled toilet paper rolls, but you could use craft rolls too.

I love making holiday crafts. Crating is such a great way to sped your time. Much better than sitting on your phone and scrolling social media for hours.
And holidays give you such a great excuse to sit and take a little bit of time to make decorations for your home. And, if you’re like me, you have tons of craft items laying around, or just random objects to upcycle, so you don’t have the extra cost of buying supplies.
Honestly, there’s no excuse not to make these cute DIY Leprechaun Hats.
These are ones I made a few years ago and stuck them on skewers so I could add them to a small flower pot near our front door. You could use these to decorate however you like.

DIY Leprechaun Hats Decorations

DIY Leprechaun Hats Supplies:
You can get the full list of supplies in the how to card below.
- Toilet paper roll – If you don’t have an empty one, you can use a paper towel roll. Or you can purchase craft rolls online.
- Green card stock – Construction paper would work too.
- Scissors
- Black card stock – Construction paper would work too.
- Yellow card stock – This is for the belt buckle on the hat, so if you have gold card stock, that would be perfect.
- Glue
- Tape
- Skewers – You could substitute a chopstick if you don’t have a skewer.
How To Make DIY Leprechaun Hats:
Cut the toilet paper roll in half. Each toilet paper roll with make two hats.
Wrap the green piece of card stock around a toilet paper roll half, making sure you are rolling on the shorter side. Cut the green paper.
Cut that strip in half to form two rectangles, one for each toilet paper roll. This will be the top of the hat.
Use the toilet paper roll to measure out a circle (larger than the roll) for the brim of the hat.
Set all the pieces aside.
Now, to work on a leprechaun’s belt to go at the bottom of the hat.
Cut a small strip of black card stock the entire length of the green rectangle’s longer side. This will be the actual belt.
Cut a small yellow rectangle from the yellow card stock, just wider than the black strip, to be the gold buckle.
Side note: If you can find gold cardstock, you can use it instead of yellow.
Finally, cut a small black square that’s the width of the long black strip. This will fit inside the yellow buckle.
Glue the belt down and let it dry completely.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can cut out a small four-leaf clover from green paper to have it pop out of the belt on the hat, but we didn’t do that.
Trace the inside of the toilet paper roll on the center of the brim of the hat. Cut small triangle teeth out from the inner circle.
Put glue around these edges and use them to affix the brim to the hat to the inside of the toilet paper roll. It’s a lot more secure this way than trying to glue the very thin toilet paper roll to the brim.
When the brim is affixed, glue the green rectangle around the toilet paper roll. Let it dry completely.
Tape the skewer inside. I did each at a different height, just to offer a little depth.

DIY Leprechaun Hats Decorations: Frequently Asked Questions
You don’t have to use toilet paper rolls.
If you don’t have any empty toilet papers handy, you can purchase craft rolls online. Those are similar in size and sturdiness, so they will definitely work in this project.
You just can’t consider this an upcycle project if you are buying the materials for the base.
I used skewers so that these leprechaun hats could stick into my planter. If you aren’t sticking this in somewhere, you could use craft sticks or popsicle sticks to prop this up.
Or, you could just lay these flat on a table. You don’t even need to put a stick inside to prop them.
If you want to make really tall DIY leprechaun hats, like the ones in this tutorial, you need to wrap the toilet paper roll in card stock. That’s how you get so much of the height of these. Only a small portion is the toilet paper roll, and that’s mostly just to keep it sturdy.
If you wanted to skip that part, you could just paint the toilet paper roll using green paint. You could use either a green acrylic paint or spray paint.
Whichever you use, make sure to paint thin layers. Cardboard is really absorbent you’ll lose the integrity of the toilet paper or craft roll if you apply the paint too thick.
Don’t forget to grab black and gold acrylic paint because you’ll need to paint the belt on too.
Then, either omit the brim of the hat or make that from paper.
Unfortunately, these DIY Leprechaun Hats are a little project. They won’t fit on your head.
These might fit on a doll’s head, but this little green hat definitely isn’t people sized. And there’s no way to modify this craft so they fit people either.
Realistically, these DIY Leprechaun Hats will probably only last you for a season. They’re just paper and glue, so they’re not incredibly sturdy, although they could be if you took care of them.
I still have the ones I made last year, but since they’re basically just making a craft out of items from around your home, you shouldn’t feel too bad throwing them away after St. Patrick’s Day is over.
