I love 2 Ingredient Dough. I use it all the time to make a ton of different recipes. Some of them are classic recipes, like pizza, and some are unconventional like this Bagel Dogs recipe.
This recipe is simultaneously easier and harder than you think.
I know. That makes no sense. And yet it does.
Making the bagel dough is so incredibly simple. It’s a lot easier than people would think because it’s made from two ingredient dough. That means you can use it as soon as you make it. There’s no waiting for it to rise.
But, the harder part lies in the fact that it’s actually a lot harder to roll the dough around the hot dogs than you would expect.
Don’t worry. I have a hack for that.
Bagel Dogs Recipe (using 2 Ingredient Dough)
Bagel Dogs Ingredients:
- 1 cup self-rising flour
- 1 cup non-fat Greek yogurt
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 8 hot dogs
- 1 egg
- 3 tablespoons everything bagel seasoning
How To Make Bagel Dogs using 2 Ingredient Dough:
Pre-heat the oven to 350 F.
Mix together the self-rising flour, non-fat Greek yogurt, salt, and garlic powder in a bowl.
Gently kneed the mixture on a floured surface to form a ball.
Side note: That’s the quick version of making the 2 Ingredient Dough. If you want a more detailed post about the dough, check out our 2 Ingredient Dough recipe.
Cut the dough ball into eight equal pieces.
Roll one into a tube (like you’re making a snake like you did when you were a kid). Make sure the tube is double the length of the hot dog.
Remove the hot dogs from the package.
Now, here’s the hack. Dry the hot dogs and rub them with the tiniest bit of self-rising flour. That will give the dough something to adhere to and will help it from falling off.
Roll the tube of dough around the hot dog, paying close attention to not overlap the dough at any point.
Put it on a cookie sheet that has a silicone baking mat on top.
If you don’t have a silicone baking mat, you can put these directly on a cookie sheet. I prefer to use a silicone baking mat because the bagel dogs just pop right off. You don’t have to worry about them sticking at all. And it’s so much easier to clean up too. You just wash down the mat. No worrying about soaking a sheet pan.
Continue until you’ve finished all eight hot dogs.
Make sure to leave room between the hot dogs as the bagel dough will rise and you don’t want these to end up sticking together.
Crack an egg into a small bowl and beat it.
Use a pastry brush to brush the egg on top of each of the 2 ingredient dough wrapped hot dogs.
Sprinkle the everything bagel seasoning on top of the hot dogs.
Bake the hot dogs for 25 to 35 minutes, until the dough is cooked through and starts to brown. The cooking time will vary with your oven and if you decide to use a silicone baking mat or not.
Bagel Dogs Recipe (using 2 Ingredient Dough): Frequently Asked Questions
We made these in the oven because it’s easier to make eight bagel dogs at once in the oven.
But, if you wanted, you could air fry a bagel dog for about 10 minutes at 350 F.
If you do make eight bagel dogs, and you want to use the air fryer, just make sure to break them into two batches (or more, depending on the size of your air fryer). You don’t want to overcrowd them and have them stick together.
You do also want to make sure you use bamboo steamer liners in your air fryer so that the dough doesn’t get stuck to the bottom of the air fryer basket.
Wrap the hot dogs tightly in foil, or in an air-tight container, and store them in the fridge for three to four days.
We prefer to reheat leftover Bagel Dogs in the air fryer. Turn it to 350 F and heat the bagel dogs for about four minutes until they’re hot and the outside gets cripsy.
You could also reheat Bagel Dogs in the oven at 350 F for about 10 minutes until they’re hot and the outside is crispy. You could reheat them in a toaster oven as well.
I wouldn’t recommend reheating them in the microwave because the bagel portion would be soggy and wouldn’t taste as great. If you absolutely have to microwave a Bagel Dog, do it for 90 seconds on high, then allow it to rest in the fridge for 90 seconds to cool.
If you’re making these Bagel Dogs for later, you can absolutely freeze them. Cook them, let them cool completely, then wrap them in foil. Store them in an air-tight, freezer-safe bag for up to two months.
You can reheat them from frozen using one of the methods above: air fryer, oven, or toaster oven. Just keep in mind that cooking times when you’re reheating them when they’re frozen can vary from cooking times when you’re reheating them from the fridge.
What do you serve with Bagel Dogs?
Bagel Dogs go with any traditional hot dog sides and a salad. We like eating these with a salad so the two items balance each other out. Our favorite Bagel Dog sides are:
What dipping sauces go with Bagel Dogs?
We absolutely love dipping Bagel Dogs in yellow mustard. It’s such a great combination. You could also use homemade ketchup, honey mustard, or a homemade cheese sauce.
