Earlier this summer, a friend sent me pounds of cherries.
That was great … except it meant that I had to figure out what to do with pounds of cherries. And quick. Because we were going to Japan shortly after they arrived.
So I pitted and froze them, leaving them for post-Japan me to deal with.
And when I got back from Japan, I used them to make this frozen cherry lemonade. It was amazing.
So, if you’re looking for something to make with cherries, this is it.

Frozen Cherry Lemonade Ingredients:
You can get the full list of ingredients with measurements in the recipe card below.
- Cherries – We use fresh cherries when they’re in season. You could use a bag of frozen cherries as well, I just don’t think they’re as sweet.
- Lemons – Fresh lemons work better than bottled lemon juice.
- Sweetener – Any liquid sweetener will work. We use honey, but you could use agave syrup or gum syrup instead.
- Water – Water helps to get the frozen lemonade to a drinkable consistency.
How To Make Frozen Cherry Lemonade:

Start by pitting the cherries.
We use a cherry pitter to do this. It’s so much faster than trying to pit the cherries by hand.
If you don’t have a cherry pitter, you can cut the cherries in half and pull out the pit. That’s really tedious and can make a big mess because cherry juice gets everywhere. You can do it this way, but we recommend not wearing a white shirt if you do.
Put the cherries in a freezer-safe bag and freeze them overnight.
You don’t wanna freeze the cherries with pits in them because it will be nearly impossible to get them out when the cherries are frozen.

The next day, or whenever you’re ready to make the lemonade, put the frozen cherries in a blender.
If you don’t have a blender, you can use a food processor. I just prefer the blender because the longer blade makes it go a little bit quicker.

Add the juice from the lemons.
I bring this up every time I have citrus in a recipe, but Pete’s citrus hack is to put the lemon in the microwave for 15 seconds. Take it out and aggressively roll it on the counter. This will break up the pulp and give you more juice per lemon.

Add in the honey (or whatever liquid sweetener you’re using).
You don’t want to use granulated sugar because it will not incorporate into the lemonade and you’ll end up with a really grainy and unevenly sweetened drink.

Pour in the water.
You don’t want to add too much water at first. The water thins it out and can potentially ruin the texture.

Blend everything together until you reach your desired consistency.
If it’s too thick, you can add a little bit more water and blend again.

Frozen Cherry Lemonade: Frequently Asked Questions
If your lemonade is coming out too thick, you can let the frozen fruit defrost a little and try to blend again.
You want the fruit to be frozen because it’s the icy component of the frozen lemonade. But, if it’s too frozen, you’ll end up with cherry pieces rather than a drink.
The blender warms up the fruit and helps it get to a drinkable consistency, but, if not, defrosting the fruit usually helps.
Adding a little bit of extra water, which does also help the fruit defrost, helps too.
If you’re not going to finish the whole drink at once, you can store the frozen lemonade in the refrigerator for a little while. Just know that it’ll probably melt and thin out, though.
We don’t peel the cherries. The skin is really thin and completely breaks apart when you’re blending this.
