My cousin sent me a photo recently of eleventy-million candy molds that she had bought for Valentine’s Day candies.

And I immediately responded that she had to make peanut butter meltaways.

They’re one of the easiest homemade candy recipes. You just combine chocolate chips with peanut butter and cool it.

Of course, she is as extra as I am, so she made these sparkly roses, which are so insanely pretty, I can’t take it.

She also took photos of the process so you too can make the prettiest chocolates for your Valentine.

Quick note: My cousin used this rose-shaped silicone mold (from Walmart) to make these. That makes them perfect for Valentine’s Day.

You don’t have to use that mold if you don’t want. And you don’t even have to make these Valentine’s Day themed if you don’t want to.

We do suggest you use a silicone mold, though, because the chocolates will pop out of these much easier than they will from a plastic or metal mold.

Peanut Butter Meltaways Ingredients:

You can get the full list of ingredients with measurements in the recipe card below.

  • Chocolate chips – You need semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips, plus white chocolate chips. The combination of bitter and sweet make for a delicious and balanced treat.
  • Creamy peanut butter – You need traditional peanut butter. All-natural peanut butter has more oil and won’t combine with the chocolate chips properly. If you have to consider a nut allergy, you could use sunflower seed butter or cookie butter instead.
  • Decorations – Any Valentine’s Day-themed sprinkles, or just red sprinkles, works. You’ll also want some edible glitter for the front of the chocolates.

How To Make Peanut Butter Meltaways For Valentine’s Day:

Milk and white chocolate chips in a bowl.

Melt the milk chocolate and white chocolate chips together.

You can do this however you feel most comfortable. Melting it in a double boiler on a stovetop over low heat or in the microwave are the most common ways.

Just be careful to really watch the chocolate chips so that they don’t burn because if chocolate chips seize, there’s no way to fix them.

A scoop of peanut butter in melted chocolate.

Stir until the chocolate chips are all combined.

Add in the peanut butter.

Mix until everything is smooth and blended.

Melted chocolate in a piping bag being piped into a rose-shaped silicone mold.

Place the silicone mold on top of a baking sheet.

Using a baking sheet makes your life so much easier. It gives a solid base to your flexible silicone mold, so it will hold steady when you’re filling it.

Put the melted chocolate mixture into a piping bag with the tip cut off.

Slowly pipe each cavity in the mold up to the top with the chocolate mixture.

Okay, I say slowly but not too slowly. The chocolate mixture cannot be reheated after it cools, so you want to work kind of quickly, but carefully.

Try not to overfill the molds.

If you don’t have a piping bag, you can use a spoon to fill the molds. The piping bag is easier because it gives you more control over what you’re doing, but do whatever works best for you.

Gently tap the mold on the baking sheet to get the air bubbles out.

Heart-shaped sprinkles in a small bowl being poured on top of melted chocolate in a silicone mold.

Add the sprinkles on top of the chocolate.

Quick note: If you don’t like sprinkles, you can add other mix-ins to make this your own. A sprinkle of sea salt, crushed pretzels, or chopped nuts would add a little bit of flavor and texture to the melt-in-your-mouth chocolates.

Place the entire tray in the refrigerator to chill for about an hour.

Chocolate roses with some pink glitter on them next to a canister of pink glitter below a paint brush with pink glitter on it.

Remove the chocolates from the mold.

Paint them with the edible dust shimmer.

You want to make sure you’re using a new (like, never touched paint) paint brush that’s food-safe to paint these.

Put them on a tray, glitter side up, and chill them in the fridge for another hour before packing.

After the edible glitter is dried, you can give them a little extra shine by spraying silver edible luster dust on top.

If you’re gifting these, you can put them in Valentine-themed boxes or cellophane bags. You can add red paper shred to the bottom of those and a cute Valentine’s Day ribbon to make them look like a more complete gift.

Peanut Butter Meltaways For Valentine’s Day: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to chill these in the fridge?

Usually, when I’m making homemade chocolate candies, I always suggest cooling them to room temperature on the counter and tell you not to put them in fridge cool because the change in temperature can discolor them/cause them to bloom.

But, you actually want to chill these in the fridge for two reasons.

First, you’re painting them with edible glitter, so you’ll cover any imperfections with the shimmer. And second, these don’t actually harden if you let them cool at room temperature. So you want to chill them in the fridge so they get the right texture.

Can you make these ahead of time?

You can make these up to two weeks ahead of time as long as you keep them in an airtight container in the fridge.

Just remember your recipient may not eat them all at once, so you don’t want to make them too early.
