We just had company for Easter, and we have more company coming tomorrow. That means I started my spring cleaning early this year. I deep cleaned our three bathrooms, dusted the baseboards, all those crazy things that you only do for company.

What I haven’t done yet, though, is go through my makeup bag. Yes, you want to spring clean your makeup products.

I was inspired to finally go through mine thanks to the new Caress Botanicals Body Sprays. There are three great springtime variants: Pink Peony, Sweet Violet, and Mediterranean Lotus. I figured if I’m changing my body spray with the season, I should change my makeup too. To help you, I’ve put together a great guide and what makeup items you need to spring clean this season.

Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Makeup Products

This Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Makeup Products post is sponsored by Mirum. Opinions are 100% my own.

My plan for this list was to start from your naked skin and work out, then from the top down, to cover every product you may be using on your face. There will be the name of the products, when you should toss it, and a brief description of what and why.

Foundation:

Toss after: One year
Details: Your foundation can last a long time because it doesn’t actually touch anything with bacteria. You pump it into your hand, but you don’t actually touch the nozzle with your hand. If you do, make sure your hands are really clean. Also, try lifting the product up just a little higher when you pump it.

BB Cream:

Toss after: 6 months to one year
I don’t like foundation at all because I feel like my skin can’t breath when I wear it. I do, however, apply BB Cream as a base. It’s my favorite beauty product. Because it’s not as easy to get into your hand without touching it like foundation, it’s quicker for bacteria to form and you’ll want to toss it around the six month mark.

Powder:

Toss after: Two years
Your powder may actually outlast the applicator that comes with it. The very affordable powders have applicators that tend to fall apart before the two year mark. But that’s the length of time you can keep your favorite powder.

Eye shadow:

Toss after: Two years
Don’t worry if you’ve found your signature shade. You can keep it for up to two years before you may want to discard it from your makeup bag. Now, big side note with this: If you have any sort of eye problems, like a sty, keep your eyes makeup free. If you don’t, you’ll want to toss your eye makeup as soon as you realize that you have a sty. Same goes with your contacts as well.

Eye liner:

Pencil: Toss after: Two years; Liquid: 3 to 6 months
I’ve been a fan of eye liner pencil for as long as I can remember. It has nothing to do with the shelf life being longer than liquid. It’s more about the ease of application. But you can keep a pencil longer than the liquid. With a pencil, each time you sharpen it, you remove a layer where any bacteria could have formed. You don’t get to remove that with a liquid liner, so you have to stop using it sooner.

Mascara:

Toss after: 3 months
I love my current mascara, and I will start crying when it hits the three month mark. This one is still perfectly beautiful. Oftentimes, mascara will start to get dry and/or gloppy before three months so you toss it early anyway.

Blush:

Toss after: 2 years
Blush seems to be the thing that always falls out of my travel makeup bag. I don’t know why, but it’s in my bag a solid 50% of the time. So there’s a slim chance mine would actually be in my makeup bag at the two year mark to change it out, but that’s when it needs to be done.

Lipstick:

Toss after: one year
If you still have your same lipstick after one year, you’ll want to replace it with a new one. But, if you’re a typical woman, the chance of that lipstick falling out of your purse and taking up residency under a car seat or bar stool is pretty likely. Typical lipsticks can last a little longer than something with a foam brush because that brush can get gunky and it needs to go.

Brushes:

Toss after: years
It’s probably embarrassing to admit how long I’ve had my makeup brushes, but those bad boys will be with me until I’m a wrinkly old grandma. As long as you take care of your brushes and clean them daily, you can keep them as long as you want. This, of course, is meant for your expensive brushes. Those foam brushes will start to fall apart quickly and will need to be replaced all the time. So invest in a good set and take care of it.

Sponges:

Toss after: 1 month (as long as you wash daily)
If you use makeup sponges for your foundation, blush, etc., you want to make sure to clean them daily. If you do, you can keep them in your makeup bag for up to a month. Don’t clean them regularly, though, and they’re going to be on their way out sooner.

Body spray/Perfume:

Toss after: Up to 5 years
As long as your body spray smells great, you can keep it up to five years (or longer, if it doesn’t get that alcohol smell to it).

Now, let’s chat a little more about the new Caress Botanicals body sprays that you’re able to pick up at Walgreens. You can get details about them online, but they’re currently only available in store.

The sprays (which come in a travel-friendly 3.1 oz. bottle) are paraben free. It’s recommended that you hold it about six-inches away and spray it on your neck and wrists. The scents are so light and fresh, it’s like a “just out of the shower” fresh all day long.

My favorite of the trio is the Pink Peony. It has a top note of White Orchid, a heart note of Pink Peony, and a base note of Tonka Beans. It’s so light and … okay, small aside: My favorite thing in life is when I wash bed sheets, then dry them with two dryer sheets. The scent is incredible and they become so soft. You just want to wrap yourself in them. This scent really reminds me of that. It’s amazing and perfect … and a lot easier to achieve.

The sprays encourage layering although, I’m typing this as I have all three layers on one arm and it’s a little much. Just the Pink Peony topped with the Sweet Violet would have been a good place to stop. Just something to keep in mind.

Have you tried these Caress Botanical Body Sprays? What do you think of them?

Interesting timing of me stumbling upon your article, as I just emptied/cleaned one of my bathroom drawers today. It’s amazing (and embarrassing) how much expired product I had! I like your guidelines. Even if I paid a ridiculous price for some jar of something, it just becomes time to put it to rest.

That IS funny timing Ellen. And I totally understand your pain with tossing an expensive product. I think that's probably why I tend to stay away from expensive products that I can't finish in a reasonable amount of time. I feel bad tossing it, but I would feel worse with some sort of infection or knowing I'm using a product with potential bacteria. Eww!

I hardly ever wear make up these days - such a shame to throw away good products! Admittedly, I've had some MAC eye shadow pots for (way too many) years. I only use about 3 of them, so I guess I should purge them. Heartbreaking when they're basically FULL!
