Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, which means you’re probably looking for craft ideas to do with your kids.

My friend Mallory made the cutest DIY yarn hearts craft with her almost two-year-old Amelia. So of course, I had to share it with you.

What’s really great is you probably have all the supplies for this at home. That means you can make them tonight!

These yarn hearts are the perfect gift for grandma and grandpa for Valentine’s Day. If you want to keep them for yourself, you could add a skewer to the bottom and turn these into heart flowers instead.

You may have to do a little supervising if you have little ones (especially with the scissors), so it’s a fun activity for you both to do together.

DIY Yarn Hearts Supplies:

How To Make Yarn Hearts:

Yarn taped to a cardboard heart.

Use the pen to draw a heart onto a piece of cardboard.

Cut the heart out using the scissors.

Cut a long piece of multi-colored yarn.

Tape the end of the yarn to the center of the heart.

Yarn wrapped around a cardboard heart.

Wrap the yarn around the heart.

You can wrap in a specific pattern, if you want to make the yarn heart interesting, or you can wrap it haphazardly. Either way is great.

When the entire heart is covered, tie the last bit to a piece at the top of the heart. Tie a loop at the other end and you can use that to hang it up.

If you don’t want to hang the DIY yarn heart, when you get to the end of the yarn, tie it to a piece of yarn that’s already wrapped around the cardboard heart with a knot. Maneuver the yarn in a way that covers the knot.

DIY Yarn Hearts: Frequently Asked Questions

How can you display DIY Yarn Hearts?

If you really like these yarn hearts, but you’re trying to figure out a way to display them, you’re in luck. We have three options for you: hanging as an ornament, as “flowers,” or on a tiered tray.

The first way to display this yarn heart is as an ornament. That’s how we have it displayed in our image above. If you want to do that, you need to make sure you add a loop at the top.

In our image, we have this hanging on a car’s rear view mirror, but that’s just for the image. It may be against your state’s laws to have anything hanging from there.

Instead, though, you can hang it as an ornament from door knobs in your home or on a Valentine’s Day tree.

The second way to display yarn hearts is as flowers. Make the heart as directed above. When you’re done, stick a skewer or dowel rod in the bottom of the heart.

Stick that skewer into a Styrofoam ball. Put that ball in a small planter. Cover it with artificial moss.

You can add more than one yarn heart flower to the planter. Just be sure to vary the heights of them to add a little depth to the decoration and make it more interesting to look at.

And then, the third way, is to add it to a tiered tray. That’s the easiest way to display it because you don’t have to leave a string out to hang it and you don’t have to worry about skewers. Just make them, add it to a tray, and that’s that.

How much yarn do you need to make DIY Yarn Hearts?

The amount of yarn you’ll need to make DIY Yarn Hearts is really dependent on a couple factors.

First, it really depends on the size of the heart that you cut from the cardboard. If you cut a large heart, you’ll need more yarn to cover it. If you cut a small heart, you’ll need less yarn to cover it.

You can also use more yarn to make a thicker heart, depending on how you want it to look. Use less yarn to make the heart thinner.

It’s up to you, which means the amount of yarn will vary based on your specific craft.

What kind of cardboard should you use to make DIY Yarn Hearts?

A piece of a cardboard box, like one that you receive when you get packages in the mail, will work to make DIY Yarn Hearts.

You want something a little thicker, like corrugated cardboard, rather than a cardboard cereal box. Cardboard that’s thin won’t really hold up in this craft. It will bend and flex and this craft will be a lot harder than it needs to be.

But, if all you have is thin cardboard, you can make it work. Just be really careful when you’re wrapping it with yarn.
