I was scrolling Facebook and saw this DIY “On A Scale Of 1 To 10 … Urinate” Funny Bathroom Sign that someone made. I laughed so hard that I grabbed my chest.
So of course, I had to make it.
And so I did last weekend.
When I was done, Pete and I decided to go out so I put it in the downstairs bathroom to dry. And then sort of didn’t think about it for the rest of the day.
We got home, and Pete went into the bathroom, started hysterical laughing, and then came out to get his phone to take a photo.
Needless to say, the sign was a big hit. And you need to make one.
I hand painted this, so you don’t need a fancy vinyl cutting machine to make it. That would make it easier, obviously, but it’s not necessary.
DIY “On A Scale Of 1 To 10 … Urinate” Funny Bathroom Sign
Now, for the few of you scratching your heads (and I know you’re out there because it happened to my friend who saw my finished project):
On a scale of 1 to 10 … urinate.
Or … On a scale of 1 to 10 … you’re an 8.
What You’ll Need:
- 8×10 stretched canvas
- Black acrylic paint
- Brown acrylic paint
- Toothpick
- Paint brush
- Baby wipe
- Glue gun
- Scissors
- Pencil

What You’ll Do:
I made the project as easy for you as possible. I made the printable for you. If you scroll to the bottom of this post, you’ll be able to print it out and avoid having to create your own.
Carefully, pull the canvas off from the wooden frame. Don’t worry if the staples don’t come out. And don’t worry if you rip small holes in the edges of the canvas either. Neither will affect your project.
Set the canvas aside.
Now, if you have wood stain, you can just stain the wood. We actually have quite a bit, but I wanted to use this paint and baby wipe method because not everyone has wood stain at home.
So, for your homemade faux wood stain: Put a dollop of brown paint on a baby wipe. Use that to cover the entire frame (except for the side with the staples).
Promise me when I tell you a little bit of paint goes a long way. I did the entire frame with that small bit you see in the photo.
I would suggest doing the outside edge first because that will be the thickest and you want it kind of thin to emulate wood stain. But honestly, you can use the part of the baby wipe without paint on it to wipe up some of the paint. That will even it out.
Set aside.
Color lightly on the back of the printable.
Place it on top of the front of the canvas. Press down (hard!) with a pencil and outline the letters. It will leave behind light pencil marks.
Using a toothpick and a steady hand, paint the first two lines. Try and paint with the toothpick more than dabbing or dotting. If you use the latter technique, you won’t end up with smooth letters.
Don’t rush. This will take a while, but it’s worth it. After it’s dry, you can go back over the letters to fix any thick dots if you need to.
Use the toothpick to outline the third row (“urinate”), then use the paint brush to paint the larger sections of the letters.
Now, keep in mind no one but you (and me) have seen the printable template. So no one but you (and me, but I won’t tell) knows what letters are thicker than the others. So if you take a little creative liberty (or your hand slips) and you need to make certain parts of letters thicker than the template, that’s fine. No big deal.
When it’s all dry, place the wood atop the canvas, making sure to align the words as you want them to appear. Trace the outer edge of the frame. Cut the canvas a little more narrow than the guidelines you just drew.
Put glue around the edge (with the staples) of the frame. Push it down on the canvas.
Let it dry completely, then hang it in your bathroom.
Now, about that printable. I made it for you so you don’t have to go on and make your own. Right click it and save it to your computer, then print it when you’re ready for it.
It’s specifically sized for an 8×10 canvas (measured including the wood). If you have a smaller sign, you can change your printer settings to make this smaller. Honestly, though, making it smaller might make the letters super difficult to paint by hand.
If you want to make your life complete easy, and printable bathroom signs are more your thing, you can actually just print the “On a scale of 1 to 10 … urinate” sign out. Then, follow the steps to take off the canvas and paint the wood. Instead of painting the words, just glue the printable down with white glue around the edges. Then, hot glue the wood back on top.
Or, buy an 8×10 frame and just put the printable bathroom sign inside and hang it.
I vote with the handpainting option, honestly.
