These DIY Easter Tea Light Candle Holders are the perfect Easter gift. And they're made from yogurt containers! Find out how at www.drugstoredivas.net.

We are having a lot of company for Easter this year, which is really special. Our first Easter here was just me, Pete, and some pasta. I had just moved here less than 10 days before, and I was having a hard time. We made the best of it, but it wasn’t the best Easter.

This year, with so much company, my heart is so full. My wallet, not so much. So I had to make a few gifts, like these DIY Easter Tea Light Candle Holders.

Now, small aside: If you know the company we’re having for Easter, don’t tell them I made this craft. I feel like they give off the impression that they came from a craft fair, which gives off the impression that I actually bought them.

Of course, I didn’t, and our company will probably realize that.

I jI just wonder if they’ll realize that I upcycled yogurt containers to make them.

This DIY candle holders craft is a really easy project and only takes a few minutes of active time. You are using spray paint, and you want the coats to dry completely before adding another coat, which is why the total time of the project is kind of high. That’s mostly passive time waiting for paint to dry.

We suggest spraying spray paint outdoors always. If you make this on a warm day, your paint layers may dry quicker and you won’t have to wait as long.

How To Make Easter Tea Light Candle Holders:

Wash and clean your yogurt containers.

If you don’t have any yogurt containers, but you still want to make this craft, any glass jar will work. You could purchase some brand new, upcycle any mason jars you have, buy some cheap at the thrift store, etc.

Remove any of the labeling from the container, making sure to remove any glue or sticker left behind. If there’s some sticky residue from the label on the glass jar, Goo Gone is a great way to get that off.

A small glass, upside down, with a rabbit sticker and silver spray paint on it.

Affix a sticker to the front of the jar.

When you’re choosing a sticker, make sure its one where it’s easy to tell what the image is from the silhouette. I looked through a lot of sticker sheets that had adorable images, like the Easter Bunny carrying a basket, but without actually seeing the sticker, you would have no idea what the design was.

Set the yogurt container upside down on a piece of scrap paper. Spray a light layer of spray paint on the container. Let it dry for 15 minutes.

I can’t stress this enough. Spray a light layer. The lightest, faintest layer possible from your spray paint can.

If you spray thick layers of spray paint on a flat, non-porous surface like glass or plastic, it will get clumpy and streaky and will completely ruin your project. Light and thin layers is the best way to spray paint on glass.

Spray on a second layer, then let it dry for 15 minutes. Repeat this process until the containers are completely covered.

For my silver spray paint, I did three layers. For yellow, I did four.

When your paint is completely dry, use the X-Acto knife (or your nail) to lift up a piece of the sticker.

Very carefully pull the sticker up completely.

A yellow jar wrapped with jute cording at the top.

Wrap three layers of jute cording around the top of the yogurt container. Tie it in the back and cut the ends close to the knot.

If you really pull the cording taut, you won’t need to add any hot glue to keep the cording in place. If you’re worried, you could use a little bit, but we didn’t need any.

Carefully, use the lighter to burn off the frays from the jute cording. This makes it look a lot more professional and a lot less homemade. Just be very careful when you’re doing this, and keep the lighter moving. Don’t stop it for too long or you risk lighting the jute cording on fire.

Set a tea light inside and your DIY tea light candle holders are done.

Quick side note: If you’re giving these as gifts and you think your recipient is going to actually light candles in this rather than just using it as home décor, you’ll want to pair it with a heat-resistant candle holder of some sort.

Glass candle holders can get really hot, so you want something between the glass and the table so you don’t potentially ruin the finish.

DIY Easter Tea Light Candle Holders: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to use yogurt jars?

If you don’t like yogurt, you don’t have to eat it just for the sake of making these DIY candle holders. Any small glass jars will work.

A small, 4 oz. mason jar is very similar in size to the glass yogurt container we used in this tutorial.

You can use any size jar you want, just make sure that it’s tall enough that a tea light will fit in the jar and the top of the candle won’t be sticking out of the top.

Can you use acrylic paint in this craft?

We don’t suggest using acrylic paint in this craft.

Acrylic paint looks really dull when it is painted on the outside of a glass jar. So, if you used acrylic paint on the outside of this, even a shiny silver metallic paint, it will look dull and clumpy, which doesn’t happen with silver spray paint.

Usually, if you’re using acrylic paint on a glass jar craft, you paint the inside because you get the shine from the glass. But, in this case, when you’re using a flame inside, we don’t recommend it for safety reasons.

Even if you wanted to use a battery-operated tea light instead, we still don’t recommend acrylic paint. We actually did try it and it was so heavy that it was impossible to pull the sticker away, so you lose your cut out shape — which is the huge part of this craft.
