I don’t know about you, but I don’t have time to go to the salon. The last time I went was three months after our wedding, when I went and got about a foot and a half cut off so I could donate it. Since then, though, I haven’t been.
At that means every time we have a wedding to go to — or even just date night — I do all my own hair. But that’s okay. You actually can get salon hair at home. We have a couple tips to help you do this.
The Night Before …
Wash Your Hair.
If your hair is already filled with product, it won’t hold a new style well as a fresh head. So you want to take a shower (the night before you need your hair done), and wash it with shampoo and conditioner. Be sure to wash and rinse well, then condition and rinse well. You want to really make sure that there isn’t any residue left behind. You want to use a good quality shampoo, but you don’t need the expensive bottles the salon sells. You can find high-quality products in drugstores, like the new Suave Professional Coconut Oil Infusion line.
Dry Your Hair.
It’s important to not go to bed with wet hair. And don’t tie it up when you go to bed either because you’ll get kinks in it. But don’t hop out of the shower and immediately blast it with heat. Towel dry it as much as you can, then let it air dry a bit after. Once you’re about 75% dry, go back to the bathroom, flip your hair over, and dry it upside down. Only dry it until it’s about 90% done and let the air do the rest.
The Day Of …
Spray Your Hair.
My hair is pretty flat, so I use a sea salt spray that gives volume before styling. It helps to give me a little more to play with when I’m styling.
Blow Out Your Hair.
Yes, you dried your hair last night, but today, you want to blow it to give it some body. Use a combination of a blow dryer and a round brush. Be sure to tease the roots a little to give yourself some extra body.
Curl it, if that’s what you’re doing. Leave it as is if you just want a blow out. Braid it, pin it … whatever you want.
Hair Spray It.
Generously spray your entire head with hair spray, give your head a little shake, and get ready for compliments.
