Michael’s: No Card Needed For Rewards & More Program Changes

michaelsI hate carrying a million loyalty cards on my keychain. I’m in Michael’s every so often, but not often enough to leave the card on my keys. And then, when I’m there and checking out, I get super frustrated that my card isn’t on me.

Now, that’s changing. Starting January 1, Michael’s is going cardless.

According to the email I got:

Starting January 1, you no longer need your MichaelsRewards™ card to redeem special offers, surprises and savings. Qualified spend will no longer be earned as part of the program. Instead, your rewards will be sent straight to your inbox or mobile phone. Plus, be sure to update your MichaelsRewards™ preferences so we can send customized inspiration and offers just for you.

    I did not carry around the michaels card, either, but they were always able to pull it up with my phone number. That email you got is confusing to me. How do you earn rewards without qualified spend? Its one of those nights.

    I’m kind of annoyed by Michael’s right now…. I have an iPhone and downloaded the Michael’s app so I could get coupons. Since the latest update to the app, the barcode for coupons won’t show up and it marks them as used (single use).

      I don’t use the app Marilyn. I always try to go through the Internet to get the emailed coupons, but they never open. I just show them the attempt on my phone, and there is always a coupon at the register that they scan for me.

    First, if you live on the East Coast, the AC Moore program has ALWAYS been better (and I was in the original trial Michael’s program years ago which had much better benefits than the current one).

    The website says they have closed membership which seems to have happened without fanfare. The cardless part is the rewards — they always would look up your membership for purchases and it would seem simpler if you have a card with you. I actually am happier that it doesn’t randomly decide when you use the reward since it sometimes didn’t maximize my discount.

    They continue to have problems communicating. The typical “surprise” reward is $5 off if you spend $20 but you really had to spend $25 AND it had to be all regular priced merchandize. They just sent me my next one (I frequently don’t get to use the reward because it nets me less than a coupon or sale) and it said to make it easier, they want it to be on my phone…but I don’t WANT it on my phone. They claim that I can set my preferences but when I wrote to customer service, they said THIS ONE has to be on the phone only…what happened to the “straight to your inbox” part? Can’t wait to see the next one…

    Michael’s has more stock than AC Moore, so I won’t say I won’t shop there anymore, but I am now shopping AC Moore FIRST and only buying what they don’t have at Michaels. I’m a gold Michael’s customer and spend literally thousands a year, but they pay little to no attention to any onf my complaints and they continue to put out coupons that are not properly honored in their stores (I have 3 near me and they will each state different rules FOR THE SAME COUPONS!).

    Color me tired of Michael’s — I feel like you need a lawyer to cut through their poor communication.
